Hi

We have just added an update to our wildlife photography site of some bird pics that Esther took in Florida this year. All photographs were taken on Nikon D200 with Sigma 50-500mm lens. Anyone who fancies a look, the pictures are here:

Excellent Chris, and compliments to Esther. Very Happy Very Happy

The long lens is very effective when it makes the depth of field so shallow. Some of those sharply focussed birds against a fuzzy background (and foreground) really stand out dramatically.

I'd be pleased to have taken any one of them. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Hi

Yep, cracking photos, well done.

The 50-500 - is that the one that looks like a bazooka?

Thanks to all for the feedback Smile

Stew

The 50-500 is quite portable as the lens can be folded down to carry etc

The one that looks like a bazooka is the Nikon 500mm prime....we do use this one aswell but it's not really very portable(a bit on the heavy side Shocked ).

Cheers

Hi Chris

You are right the Nikon is bigggggg but I was thinking of the one Sigma had on their stand, that really was even biggerrrrrrrrrr and looked like a rocket launcher, will have to have a look to see what the focal length is

Hi Stew

I think I know the one you mean. It is the Sigma 300-800 mm zoom lens...affectionately known as the Sigmonster!!

We looked at this one but the general concensus on most photographic forums was that the Nikon or Canon fixed 500mm lens gave the best optical performance, especially when used with a 1.4 or 1.7 teleconverter. We went with the Nikon AFS 2 500mm prime & have been pretty pleased with the results. Still a hefty bit of kit to cart around nature reserves etc but it keeps us fit Wink
