I've been in Spain for a few weeks now. Originally I had intended to buy a Yoigo SIM card for my unlocked Nokia 6680, as research before I left the UK suggested this was the cheapest SIM option at around €1 per 10MB connection. I had also found out that they are sold at 'The Phone House' stores, but I was stymied when I found that the branch that their website said was located in a San Sebastian out-of-town shopping centre was not yet open when I arrived! There was however a branch of Movistar, so I went in and asked if they sold SIM cards which would allow an internet connection. The salesman - who luckily spoke good english - was incredibly helpful and, although he didn't initially know, spent ages finding out for me. Eventually the answer he came up with was that Movistar SIM cards (costing €15, including €12 credit) WOULD connect to the internet, providing:
1) a national (within Spain) phone call lasting at least 30 seconds is made first
2) Connection was always made via the 'Escrtorio Movistar' software
This software does NOT come with the SIM card, so I used the free WiFi connection in the shopping centre to download it. If anyone else is thinking of using Movistar, they might want to download this software before leaving home - go to and search for 'Escritorio Movistar'.
The other thing the salesman told me was that, like Yoigo, a 10MB session - to be used within one day, (finishing midnight) - would cost €1. This turned out to be wrong; the actual cost is €3.48. Unfortunately I was hundreds of kilometres away from San Sebastian before I found this out! Assuming that the €1 cost of the Yoigo offering is correct (and that the connection works), it would be a far cheaper option. I have at least found one way of connecting while in Spain which, while not comparable cost-wise with equivalent UK sevices such as 3 and T-Mobile, is at least an affordable way of keeping in contact.
I had high hopes (from reading posts in this forum) of being able to use a lot of WiFi in Spain, but have been dissapointed.
- Having visited at least four Repsol petrol stations, I have yet to find one with WiFi. Are only motorway stations or ones in big cities (both of which I haVe avoided) fitted with this facilities?
- Although 50% of the campsites I haVe used offer WiFi, the majority are tied to a company called delphynet who charge €4 for one hour. While this may not sound that much more than Movistar, the difference is that your €4 is used up exactly 60 minutes after first logging on - you cannot for example pick up your mail, log off to write your responses offline and then log back on to send them.

Hope this is useful. Will be back in France next week, and back on my Auchan dongle!

Actually with Delfinet there are different set ups at each site. At some the one hour is for one hours use over fifteen days. What was interesting though is that they do a fifteen day card for something like 40 Euros. We did not buy on and did not confirm whether it worked at all Delfnet sites. We did experiment once though by taking a one hour card from one site to another and it did allow us access. Need to investigate this further for our next trip.

Well I am back now from my wordly travels and looking at the site to see anything of interest. I am also sending this post from a free WiFi access outside a garage. I would never use Movistar for internet access as its so expensive. It is telefonicas mobile side and the way they charge is disgracefull .I have no problems with finding access via WiFi generally for free and I know of lots of Repsol, Campsa, etc fuel stations which are enabled both on the Autoroutes and at the side of normal roads. My advise would be use Skype and get the little Jwire bot check for WiFi hotspots there are plenty to choose from at least in all the areas of Spain i have visited
