With the renewed interest in avatars Zoe and I have just identified a possible problem if anyone wants to send an animated gif via email.

It seems that AOL will not allow an animated gif to download, but converts it into a bitmap - which is useless of course.

This is not gospel as we have only Zoe's experience, but if anyone has similar problems that could be why.

Hi Phil

Most image manipulation software will do the conversion for you.

Irfanview is free, and a lot of people like it. (Google for it.)

Can't give much more advice since I use a posh program that I forgot to give back when I retired, so don't know about alternatives.

(A bit out of date now, but still works - just like me really!! Laughing )

You may find this is because the image being hosted is a bitmap image, you can check this by right clicking on the image and selecting 'properties' from the menu that appears, in the window that opens; look where it states 'type:', you'll probably find it says 'bitmap image'.

As zebedee has said; most image manipulation applications will convert it, including 'paint' which is included with windows, simply open the file, then choose save as from the file menu, in the save as dialogue box select the prefered type (gif, jpeg etc) from the save as type drop down box.
