Good morning all.

The wife has an aging Canon 300D digital SLR camera whilst she teaches herself photography and plays around. She's had it since new a fair few years now and is convinced it's not taking as good a photo as it did.

It's been well used in all sorts of conditions so was wondering if it was worth getting it serviced and maybe cleaning up inside the camera body. Is this something that can be tackled personally, or would we be better taking it off somewhere?

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve

I have been using a Canon Eos5d professionally now for 2 - 3 years. It gets hammered.

You can clean the sensor google cleaning the sensor or look in your manual. You will need the correct cleaning kit.

The other easy thing you can do is reset the camera to factory settings. Over the years it is easy to change the settings and lose its optimum quality.

Hi Stew

Thanks alot for taking the time to reply. I shall indeed look up on google the procedure. I just assumed this would be a job for a professional who knew a bit about camera sensors Smile . Apparently the newer-fangled canons have self-cleaning sensors, but would assume the 300D is too old.

Good idea on resetting to defaults. Think I'll also look at upgrading the firmware on it, as although that will not be the cause for degrading quality, it may be worth doing if I'm resetting everything.

Thanks again
Steve

Hi Steve

No problem.

Sensor cleaning is easily a DIY job but must be done with plenty of care. With digital cameras there is the iSO, colour temperature and image size settings, all that change the image quality. Hope it gets sorted out
