HI

We are touring through Germany, Austria down to Italy starting next week and I wondered if anyone has been over the Grosslocknerstrasse from Zell am See to Lienz. Our motorhome is 22' and we have been over several mountain passes but never this one.

Can anyone help please?

We drove up to the glacier at the top from Zel am See in our 27 footer then returned back down again, no problems apart from brakes overheating but that only became an issue when I stopped to check, should have kept going until they cooled down. You should have no worries, excellent views.
Just beware the cyclists Shocked

We have been over it twice; first time in lovely sunny weather when the kids played snowballs at the top; second time in dense fog - a total nightmare.
Near the top the road branches; right-hand branch goes to the Franz-Joseph Hotel and is a dead end. At the Hotel parking area it is possible to get down onto the glacier.
As mentioned previously, you will find that your brakes get very hot. There are brake-cooling facilities on many of the bends, where you can stop and pour water on them.
If you go over on a fine day, the views are spectacular.

Thanks for the advice.

It sounds like it would be worth a look if the weather is good, so hopefully we shall be giving it a go.
