Just wondering what all you photography buffs use to store your pics on(CD/DVD) as a file back up, and display ie a DVD to play on your telly with titles and music.

I have burned to disc, raw files as a back up storage, away from the computer but always seem to have problems when I try to be clever and do a nice DVD to show folks. (Talking about still photo's, dont get me started on bloody movies)

I use Movie Maker, simply because it's there and free and seems reasonably easy to use. The problems start when I try to burn to disc. This time all of a sudden there were files missing, so it couldn't complete to burning, I didn't move anything, so what happened.?

Does ayone else have problems, if not what software do you ues and how reliable/easy is it.

(Edited to improve spelling and readability in case that's why you've not replied Rolling Eyes )

For all my back ups inc thousands of photo's video's which is being added to daily, I simply use a high spec memory stick.

I keep one in the van (hidden) in case the lap top gets nicked. In case the van catches fire or also get nicked I also have left a memory stick with with friends. We have a spare memory stick and exhange via post to ensure a constant update is maintained.

16gb is cheap enough and they are so small you could have it on your key ring.

I had some many problems with bruning to DVD etc, i gave up.
 Same here

Badger -

I too have had problems burning DVD's. Although no expert in this area, I think it has something to do with the limitations of Movie Maker - essentially it doesn't have a DVD burning facility. I have managed to get around this by editing in Movie Maker, saving in an appropriate format, and then using the software that came with my DVD burner to make the DVD (typically Roxio or Sonic My DVD).

The alternative for getting video on to DVD is to invest in one of the proprietary video editing suites which typically have DVD burning software built in (Pinnacle or Adobe perhaps).

For really good advice on video editing and burning I would try The Simply DV Bulletin Board. Pappa John, a moderator there is probably the leading authority on Movie Maker anywhere.

I use an external hard drive to backup my files and I do slide shows on the computer using Adobe Lightroom. You could use other software for slideshows. I believe windows has a built in option in the photos folder. I am able to use the computer as it's a Mac and I can put it on the dining room table. works for me. Very Happy

def memory stick - so easy to use and really fast too.

also - you they have more storage than a dvd (4gb plus anyway) and easy to transfer between any pc/mac with a usb slot - no worrying if you need to finalise the disc etc..

OK so you seem to be saying "memory stick".......you also seem to be saying get lots of them and I suppose you would label them up ?
OK so that a solution to the storage bit. Although I find it a little strange as the accepted media for storage seems to be DVD

I will look on that forum and see whats what, so thanks for the heads up.

DVD's and CD's will not loast forever, thats the snag. I have a real problem, I don't like deleting photos, and since getting hooked on the hobby a year ago, I now have 600GB of photos on my PC, and no backups.

I can't imagine the number of memory sticks required going forward, must be a better way.

Gary.
