I have a daughter who is going to do a course on photography and needs to have a digital SLR. This would be her first digital SLR and I am worried about buying her the wrong thing or being led by some spotty face salesperson down the high street. I guess what I am after is a good all round SLR camera that would be good for her to start on whilst giving her above average results.

I have a budget of around £600 so what should you with knowledge recommend?

Thanks

Keith

Hi Keith,

Your question is huge and answers will be based on what we out here own ourselves.

However, in terms of value for money you will not beat this deal for a factory re-furbished camera:

Fuji S5

The S5 is still sought by professional photographers as being one of the best in it's class for portrait work. I have the S3 which is a bit slow, but the S5 is based on the award winning Nikon D200 but with Fuji's own chip.

If you keep your eye on the site they get cameras in on a regular basis. The good bit is you are buying at cheaper than eBay prices for an as new camera, direct from the manufacturer and no salesman!

It takes standard Nikon lenses which means you can always find something for her.

Best regards

Chris

Hi Keith

Is your daughter doing it because of an interest in photography, and with the intention of continuing after the course, or is it just one module in an Arts degree or something like that.

If the former, take all the advice you can get and spend the 600 quid.

If it's only a module you need spend no more than a couple of hundred to get her something more than adequate - bearing in mind it may get little use after the course.

Just a thought! Very Happy

HI Zebedee,

Thanks for your reply.

She is going to do this two year full time course - Photography - Multi-Media Level 3 BTEC National Diploma (Edexcel) in Exeter college. It leads to her being able to go on to Uni to study Photography. She has her heart set on being a photographer and I want to support her as much as possible. To be honest I am relieved that she has some focus at her age (17) and knows what she wants to do. Very Happy

She spends her life with her point and shoot digital camera stuck to her face. Shocked Laughing

Thanks Chris it looks just what she is looking for. I have saved the link and will monitor it for a while.

I understand that the choice of cameras on the market is vast and it really is down to personal preference and what you can afford to spend.

one suggestion I'd make would be to stick with either Canon or Nikon (and I'd lean more towards Canon), simply because plenty of other people will have the same and they'll all be able to share lenses and equipment, particularly if they're given odd assignments to do Smile

Also, consider buying a basic film body to go with it (lenses *should* be compatible). I'd be surprised if a photography course doesn't touch on some aspects of film-based photography, and they aren't desperately expensive.

From memory, Canon's 'mid-entry' level body is the 400D, my brother has it and it's a really nice camera. In fact I just looked and Jessops has the new 1000D for under £400 and it looks like a nice bit of kit.

This is so true so here is my two pennies worth.

I have a Pentax istSD for the very simple reason that it has a physically smaller body than many and I found it fitted my hand more easily. Since it is in my hand most of the time with a long lens on it was a high consideration.

Thanks for your reply Wilse,

I have had a look at the site and the reviews are very good thanks. The canon 40d looks very nice indeed. So many to chose from Confused

Mike

I take your point regarding Canon and Nikon.

She already has an old 35m Pentax with all the lenses/filters she should need to get her going. She has already taken some very god pictures with it.

Strange you mention Jessops as I am able to get staff discount in there through a friend of mine... Wink
