I've been getting frustrated with my Pace/Sky digibox since my Camos aerial alleged that it could home in on seven different satellites, while the Pace box resolutely refused to acknowledge anything other than Astra South.

At the NEC I spoke to those nice people from RoadPro and they recommended the Zehnder DX65 decoder, which they had on a special show offer - well, not very special, but the discount was enough to pay for my lunch.

I spent a Sunday afternoon anxiously unplugging the Pace, plugging in the Zehnder (that was the easy bit), changing the language to English (Roadpro provide a supplement to achieve that) and going through the satellites from the Camos. Yep, I can now get signals from six of the satellites (the seventh is called AB3 and the Zehnder doesn't seem to know about it). Good signals for British television and radio broadcasts on Astra (though not Five - see below).

As some of you know, I am a classical music enthusiast, a breed generally not recognised these days by British television channels, but on Sunday afternoon I found two concerts going on, one from Germany, and, yes, one on the Slovenian second network. Rubbish conductor, adequate-to-bad orchestra and superb singer.

Who's a happy bunny, then? Thanks, RoadPro.

Now to go abroad and see if the Zehnder can pick up British television signals from the fringes any better than the dismal Pace. The main disadvantage for some British users is that Five is not yet available through the Free-to-air channels on the Zehnder and there is no way to use my £20 decoder card from the Pace.

PS It's been fascinating going through the 2000 or so channels now available. Most popular are soft porn channels, followed very closely by God channels, with shopping channels in a distant third place, followed by sport. I'm not interested in sports, but I'm told that you can pick up subscription-only sports broadcasts for free on obscure channels if you are happy to cope with Arabic, Turkish, Hindi or whatever commentators.

PPS I now find that AB3 is called Eutelstat, and the Zehnder offer another 58 stations on Eutelstat. Haven't got time to check that out at present.....

I've had the Zehnder DX65 for nearly a year and I'm seriously impressed with it.

The other good thing is you can update the system (channels when new ones are added etc.) via Astra 1. Though the process does wipe out your favourites.

That is more or less Darwinian survival. Convincing proof to me that any notions of "civilised" are greatly overestimated.

So do we conclude that satellite TV viewers will take over the world ?

We may well find out if those fudging the figures right now don't do a good job of delaying Armageddon for the next generation.

...and defaults to German, which, since the instruction manual has now fallen down the back of the settee, and you can't remember which of the initial menu items (in German) leads you to the language change option, can be a bit frustrating.
