Last month on a gloriously sunny day I took a lot of special-to-me photographs at an ISO setting of 1600 (having on the previous evening been taking shots in poor light).

Can you recommend any sort of aftercare treatment (for the photographs!) that will reduce the washed out and grainy look?

Hi Smilo,

Once the grain is in you cannot get rid of it.

The best solution is to turn the pic into a B&W or Infrared and enhance the grain.

If you have Photoshop this is a realitively painless operation. B & W I am sure you know.

IR as follows:

1. Convert your image to B & W by going Image>Adjustments>Black and White Menu and select Infrared. Check highlights with sliders individually.
2. Create a new Fill Layer with 50% grey. Change the Blending Style to Overlay Go Filter>Noise>Add Noise. Click on Gaussian and Monochrome buttons.
3. Open Filter>Distort>Lens Correction. Select grey layer and reduce the vignette to dark at -50.

Regards

Chris

Hi Smilo

Certainly Chris's suggestion would create a very impressive shot. If you want me to have a look at the photo email it through to me. If you want to pm and me and I will let you have the email address

If you have Photoshop CS/2/3/4 or PS Elements or Lightroom you can process your image as if it was a RAW file even if its Jpeg. Within the RAW processing module there are controls for reducing Luminance and Colour Noise.

You can also download "noise reduction software", check out "Noiseware Community Edition", it might make quite a difference.

Thank you. Does this http://majorgeeks.com/Noiseware_Community_Edition_d5758.html look to be the right thing?
