Talking to people on a site last week and I got introduced to the wonders of storing films on a hard drive instead of all those bulky DVD's rattling around.
My question is because my Avtex tv wouldnt recognise the hard drive, started on about partitions, so we tried an unpartitioned memory stick, again via the usb input and it still wouldnt perform.

Suggestions please, it really is a super TV and DVD player.

PS Found out today that I can feed it with audio from the computer so 'er indoors will be able to hear The Archers properly in the morning, down here in Portugal.

PPS 22 degrees this afternoon!! Sorry about that couldnt resist it.

You would need to contact Avtex on 029 2061 0109 to clarify if external hard drives plugged in via USB will work. I believe they may but there will be a number of factors that would need to be taken into account, so please review the info below and have an idea if you speak to Avtex of these.

The hard drive would need to have an external power source.
There are various partition formats (ie, FAT, NTFS, ReiserFS, ext2fs/ext3fs) , and I do not know what would be compatable.

Whether it supports boot partitions, extended partitions or logical partitions.

Also, whether the file formats can be decoded by the TV, DivX and XVid are very similar but the Avtex may only like DivX, I am certain it will also play MP4 and MP3.

Check with GSpot which codec the file is encoded in and see what it says;
http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

The system will accept USB pen drives so I would expect if the hard drive met certain criteria that it would work.

I hope this helps,
Regards,

Having spoken to Avtex this morning, they are not certain if an external drive will work. If it is going to, then it will have to work on the lowest common denominator of file system, ie FAT16. I am going to have a play with mine and see what success I have and I will let you know in due course hw I get on.

Chris, thanks a lot for all your info, I tried with a USB Stick and it didnt like it.

Presently in Portugal for the winter and there are loads of DVDs around the site to swop, not the proper answer but it gives us a supply of things to watch.
Presently playing with a small 40cm dish -in -a- box set up from Leroy Merlin, if thats your scene as well.
Only started to set it up yesterday and found Hotbird and Astra 19 but no astra 28, will play again today.

Very many thanks for your trouble

Your more than welcome!

You will find it difficult in Portugal to recieve Astra 2D with a 40cm dish, I would reccomend you use a larger dish to achieve this, 65-85cm this is still no gaurantee though. The alternative is that if you are happy with your current setup and the channels you have is to stick with it, there are many other satellites with English content that just Astra.

Satellite reception is very much trial and error when you are manually seeking, so trial and error and patience is very much needed.
