We have a 12v Sky box working via a Camos dome in a locker with a Freeview box. The TV runs off an inverter. The TV in the lounge area works fine. The lead coming from the Sky box goes into a splitter with a feed to the front TV and another feed to the rear TV. The Freeview box is connected to the Status aerial with the output to the flip down cab tv only.
I set everthing up at home and it works perfectly. We went away for the weekend and the rear TV would not give a good Sky picture. Lots of lines and poor sound. A quick retune (all Sky is fed via co-ax) and we could get a good picture and no sound. A slight manual tune gave us good sound and a black and white picture. Flicking through the TV channels I could pick up most Freeview channels in poor quality WITHOUT the Freeview box connected to front or rear tv's (it's only connected to flip down tv)
Came back home and decided to investigate and all tv's work perfectly as they did before we went away.
WHY did this happen?
Is it because the Freeview signal when we were away is far stronger than the signal at home? (The Status aerial has to adjusted very finely at home as opposed to hardly any adjustment when we were away) Is the Freeview signal strong enough to blanket out the Sky signal being sent down the co-ax? Or is it something else?
If my guess is correct, can I screen something somewhere and how?
Thanks
Dennis

Dennis,
If the problem was on Freeview, then it could be either to weak a signal or too strong a signal. They will both give the same effect. If the analogue picture was very good then the problem would have been too strong signal. Many TVs and especially small screen (23" and below) suffer from to much gain on the digital tuner. This is very difficult to adjust, you could fit attenuators and they are cheap, but they will also weaken your analogue signal. This sort of thing will become very prevalent as we go further into switch-over as the transmitter power will be increased by a factor of 10. Any TV that is struggling now with a strong signal will give up completely at switch-over.
The problem is that most small screen TVs are made in China and tested with a laboratory produced signal. That signal bears no relationship with a signal transmitted in the dirty air of a built up area with trees and buildings and pirate radio stations trying to kill it before it reaches you. So, to make it as robust as possible they ramp up the gain on the tuner.
Hope this explains,
Gerry

Hi Gerry
The problem was the Sky picture via co-ax to rear. Freview was/is not connected to front or rear TV only the flip down which was not turned on, neither was the Freeview box.

Maybe it's just me, but I switched off when I read:

"The" TV
Lounge TV
Front TV
Rear TV
Cab TV

I'm only a bloke and easily confused.

Guess you've already checked all your coax connections?? It is very easy for the connector on the end to be pulled off the coax slightly and cause a short out between the inner core and outer brade of the coax.

Hi Snelly. Yes, I have taken the plugs off and checked, all ok. As I say the strange thing is that it works perfectly at home in a poor Freesat area and notwhen we were away. Don't know why the freesat should affect it when it's not even connected to the Tv's in question.

Dave, What bit is confusing. Laughing
We have 3 tv's in the van
1. Flip down cab TV
2. Lounge TV (front)
3. Bedroom TV (rear)
Now come on Dave, concentrate, YOU can do it Laughing

Hi Peedee
At home on mains hook up. Away either on mains or shared generator. No different on either 12v or 240 via genny.
Thanks
Dennis

Have you tried a direct co-ax connection to each of your TVs in turn (ie not using a splitter) and se if this makes a difference
And where id the cable run. Does it have to go round corners?
Try hooking up a temporary cable direct from the Satus to each TV
I had a problem with a kinked pre cabled co-ax running from my sat dish to the Skybox
Hope it helps
Happy wheels

Hi Skimbo
I have tried connecting the SKY box directly to rear/bedroom TV (missing out the splitter). It does not impove situation. The coax to the rear is OE fit. I have not tried a new cable for 2 reasons. I don't have one long enough and secondly, I am assuming the cable is OK as it works 100% at home.
I am now leaning towards the Status aerial and booster/distribution box was pulling in a strong signal and sending that down the coax, (although NOT connected at any point) which probably also acts as an aerial to the rear/bedroom TV. I will investigate the possibility of using the Status box to handle the distribution rather than use a splitter?
Thanks
Dennis
