Hi

I am trying to understand why my Drivers airbag (in the steering wheel) was disabled / deactivated from new, I have been told that it is due to the drivers seat having a swivel base, but could not gather any more info.

I think this could be standard on Frankia Motorhomes (or at least the Sprinters)

My local Mercedes Commercial dealer couldnt explain why the airbag would require deactivating and told me that it should be easier to recativate it than it would have been for them to deactivate it
(as authority from MB is required to deactivate an airbag).

They agree with me that the seat will never be be swivelled around when the vehicle is moving so we can not see a reason for this

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to why this needs to be deactivated and any good reason not to get it reactivated ?

Anyone else out there with deactivated airbags?

Hi,

Perhaps they deem it to dangerous if the bag were activated when someone is sitting sideways on to the bag. I think I'd trade the chances of a thick ear for the benefits of an airbag on the open road.
You could probably sue them for the thick ear though.

Hi MiketheWelshman

I was advised that the airbag had been deactivated & had to sign a form to acknowledge this when I collected the van from the factory in Germany. ( May 2008)

prior to this when I ordered the van I tried to order a passenger airbag but was advised it was not an option via Frankia (was via MB) because they couldn't be used with swivel seats is what I was told

Yet the MB factory can fit MB swivel seat bases as an option extra

I seem to recall from a recent price list that airbags on Frankia MB Sprinters on the low profile model are now activated

but these were still not available on the A-Class models with the different seats

or did I get that the wrong way round?

anyway my drivers airbag is still deactivated -I didn't do anything about it - forgot about it to be honest

EuroCommercials the MB dealer in Bridgend reckoned at the time that they could have re-activated the airbag but said that it would have been VERY difficult to get permission from MB to de-activate it - they were surprised it was off!
