Hi

Dawnraider has kindly offered to sponsor the 2009 MHF Photography Comp to the tune of £250 again. Many thanks Ken and many thanks to the 2008 individual round sponsors too who were

Van Bitz
Starspanngledspanner
Snellyvision
Outdoorbits
Artona Studios

I am now starting to think about the plans for the 2009 competition and welcome your thoughts, suggestions and any offers of further sponsorship.

Put forward what ever you think, do we need different levels of standard, do we need rounds for digital/non digital, do we need ...............?????

Finally have you voted for the winner of 2008, if not please go to

I think we need a catagory for "non photoshoped". There is now a very fine line between photography and abstract art.

My opinion - I'll get my coat.

Regarding Photoshop, I have no objections to its use, PROVIDED I can't tell it has been used! Smile

As to anything else, whatever gets maximum participation is fine by me, just think it ALL through beforehand and explain the categories, timing and scoring detail fully UP FRONT, then stick to it.

That makes sense!! Agree with that - I'm just a simple (ex) sailor so the instructions have to be as idiot proof as my camera. It'll be Mrs Deluxe who enters anyway as I can't take photos to save my life!

The comp is for the members so I am hoping for some positive input prior to us starting the comp next year and then I agree, once its started it will be too late for anyone to disagree with anything and expect it to be changed

Hi Stew, here are my thoughts on categories:-

The category with the most entries was I believe "landscapes". Many of the entries seemed to be sunsets, so how about having sunsets as a separate category?

Stewart,
I think it is worth you reviewing some of the comments made by the judges last year. One in particular springs to mind,"restrict the number of entries per person" In my view there is a definite need to do this.

We started off with 8 judges last year although I think we only had 6 at times. Judging was done in 2 rounds :

Round 1 - Each judge selected five favourite photographs. If all the judges partake then this gave a pre selection of 40

Round 2 - From these each judge select a favourite pic which will then gave a final 8.

Each judges then put them into order of preference. The favourite pic earnt 8 points, least favourite 1 and the one with the most points won.

I don't think there was too much wrong with this procedure although I did have some concerns and felt in round 2 each judge should pick two photos, one from his own five and one from another judges 5. This at least would make sure we had a good selection to award points to.

I did suggest some topics for 2009. The ones that spring to mind are "Trees", "Sport", Urban Scene" and one that captures movement.

If nothing else this post might encourage a bit more debate.

I have no objection to 'photoshop' but if you ban it then unless you use a bit of software to detect its use mathematically, the better users of it will get away with it.

Many of the snappers (motorhomers who happen to carry a camera around) will be put off by the 'professional' photos in the competitions. Whilst I think we can all learn from them aspects of compostion etc there needs to be a lesser class for us mere mortals. I would leave it up to the integrity of the submitter which class they enter in but some guidelines might be needed.

I 'Photoshop'....or 'adjust' virtually every image I take...as many do!
I don't see any problem or impropriety with doing that.
I think many people see a Black Art where there isn't one!

As suggested last year....only one or two entries per person.

Fewer rounds and longer entry times otherwise the competition fades away to total disinterest again.

For what it's worth Smile
