Having had our MH for all of 5 minutes now, I am thinking ahead to next year when we trundle off to mainland Europe. We hope to travel down to Italy and Portugal, not necessarily Spain, and also to delve into the backwoods of France. I'm only interested in receiving FreeSat or Free to View channels but want to be able to get UK BBC ITV etc reliably.
From information on MHF I've already gleaned that as you go further south a normal 40cm or even 60cm dish is no guarantee of getting a signal. It seems that to be sure, a dish of 88 cms is the minimum. Clearly this leaves out any roof mounted option so a freestanding tripod would be acceptable. Zehnder have been recommended for the receiver and there seems to be many options for a dish kit which would give me cable, compass, tuning metre etc. So for about £250 I could have a usable system.
A couple of questions.
1) My Voyager has been wired for Freeview TV and has two mounting points. One in the lounge and one in the bedroom. There is coax cable points and 12v power at each point. Currently I have a Status 530 aerial and booster in the wardrobe. Can I use this cable set up to run satellite, maybe tapping in to the booster box somehow? This would mean no additional wiring.
2) Where is the best place to locate the Receiver. Does it have to be close to the aerial?
Any other information would be gratefully received.
1) Nope, satellite works differently to terrestrial. Firstly you dont use in line booster boxes, there's no need. You also can't split one signal into two or more. You have to have one lnb output per tv (one coax per tv from the dish). You also really need one receiver per tv. You can split the output from a receiver, but you can only watch the same channel on both tv's.
2) Reciever for satellite can be anywhere really, best to have near tv.
Oh and dont get rid of your status, its your back up!
Maybe I didn't explain myself very well. I want to replace the terrestrial set up I have in the MH. I also don't have two TV's, just one that I can swap from one location to another. The wiring from the Status 530 is already there. It comes down through the roof to a connection box and from there is wired out to two different TV points. I can move the TV from one to the other.
I want to retain all the existing wiring which has been fitted at the factory.
You will need a min of 1.2mtr dish for southern Spain ,most of Portugal is west facing , but really won't you have more Interesting things to do than watch Brit TV,
I have a Maxviw Crank-up 66cm and my experience is as follows. I have received Public Service channels (BBC's ITV's and Irish) throughout France, Western Germany, Switzerland, Iberian Peninsula down to a line approxinatley from Valencia to Lisbon, but this may reduce in heavy clouds/rain conditions. A lot of the rest of the stuff comes in right down to the south coast of Spain/Portugal, I have no experience going east, yet.
As regard my set up, my dish is connected directly to a Sky box which has two RF outlets which can serve two different TV's, BUT both will only show the selected channel. A 'Magic Eye' can be connected in line with one of them so that the box can be out of sight and controlled via the 'Magic Eye'. I note you mentioned a Freesat or Free to air box, A free to air box or a Sky box with a Sky free view card or no card will do the job, I have a Sky box permanently on a 150 watt inverter even when on EHU (the smallest one you can get will do as the box only requires about 25 watts), which means the I don't have to go changing as I use it on or off EHU.
hi silvasurfa, your information is not quite correct. you do not need a 1.2 dish in southern spain, i have an oyster 85cm dish and have all the uk channels 24 hours a day here in marbella. if the weather is wet then i will lose the brit channels and so will most people with a 1.2 dish! malaga to gib i use my 85 cm, algarve portugal also. agadir morocco had itv1, channel five and most of my sky package. regards sean
Hello Colonel
Lidl were doing a complete system in a box with a choice of 60 or 80 cm
The promotion may be over but my local lidl still has plenty of both sizes.
The 80 cm would be the one you want. The system costs £59 but you would need a tripod
which is available from ebay cheaply.
Your existing wiring and sockets are fine once the booster is removed.
The first few times of setting up tripod and dish and aligning it will be frustrating but bear with it,once you have done it a couple of times it will seem easy.
Ebay also have complete systems including tripod, however,i have experience with the lidl system and know that the free to air receiver and lnb are very good for your purpose.
kind regards
damien purcell
No Colonel i haven't
however i have used sat systems for many many years and the spec (sensitivity etc)leads me to believe that the lidl system would serve well.
kind regards
damien purcell
NB even if the promo is over they still have systems in many of their stores
