Being a middle aged man I have difficulty in expressing emotions especially around death. This being brought up in the stiff upper lip tradition.

We have lived in the same house since 1982 and been friends with Harry my next door neighbour.

Over the last few years Harry, has suffered from a smoking related illnesses but each and every night I went around to see him and his wife. He was confined to his armchair where he ate, slept and spent all his time.

At weekends we used to do his shopping as well as the odd job or three.

Today just after lunch Harry passed away peacefully whilst sleeping.

On one hand I feel I have lost a real close friend someone who I could have a chat to about anything from his war time experiences to his beloved West Ham, but on the other hand feel he is now better off as his confinement and inability to do anything was so frustrating to him.

Harry Clark RIP
Even if you were a Hammer!!

This post has touched a nerve for me as I also have a great neighbour and friend in advancing years by the name of Harry.

Its clear to me by your post that he was as great a neighbour to you as you were a friend to him.

He sounded like a fine man.

Condolences to you all.

Pete

AAWW thats so sad and so near Chrismas as well

what a nice friend he had in you, its uplifting to hear your story even though it has a sad ending, my condolences to his family

we had an old lady living next door to us years ago, she had breathing problems due to contracting TB during her nursing years

I used to do her shopping and errands for her and Tony did all her odd jobs, it was a shock one day when I went round to see if she wanted any shopping and she had died, it affected me for a long time, we had to break into her house to help her but it was too late.

you can honestly say that your neighbor had a true friend in you.

take care

Anne
