Earlier this month I called Sky because my HD box (18 months old) had broken. They replaced it with a refurbished box and within an hour that one had broken too. That week I had a further 3 refurbished boxes. All had the same problem in that they could not receive a signal on one or other of the inputs. Sky even replaced the dish and LNB. The engineer told me that HD boxes were incredibly unreliable especially the Thomson boxes. They are breaking down all the time apparently. The new generation of Samsungs haven't been around long enough for reliability to be tested.

In the end Sky gave me a brand new HD box (Samsung) and so far it has worked well. But be aware of the reliability problem before you purchase one.

We have just got Multi room with a + box. Sky wanted £260 for the box and install. After a bit of haggling I got that down to £109.

It might be worth having a deal with Sky as already said HD box's have had there problems and having a new one might be the cheapest long term option.

Richard...

The reliability of the Thomson HD boxes has been discussed extensively:
