Good call. Any of the 900 series according to feature set/ price preference.

PS While I'm writing, I'm after a camera for my son. Unfortunately his requirements aren't prioritised, but are slim/pocketable, robust, water resistant (snowboarding) and quality imagery. I get stuck at the combination of robust OR water resistant AND quality imagery, let alone slim with it. And that's without a price constraint (though there is one ....)
I have a Mk 1 Canon IXus and its a brilliant little camera, cost a bomb when I first got it. Good optics 2 X optical zoom and 2 megapixel. I now also have a Canon S31S which will do a lot more and again cost a lot more than it does now. 12 X optical zoom and 6 megapixel. But my top criteria now when selecting a camera is the battery type. NEVER again will I purchase a camera that has a dedicated rechargeable battery pack. This is (and remains) the biggest downside of the Ixus - and I have now got through 3 battery packs. The S31S takes AA cells or NIMH or NiCad variants of the AA cell which means I can always obtain fresh batteries fast when I need them. In honesty I have stuck to Duracells and no longer bother with re-chargeables. Above 5 megapixel the next most important for me is the optical zoom range. Shirt pocket - Er no!. But some get close but wont take ordinary cells.
Lastly the flash capability is something to consider as well.
I had a Canon Ixus 310 but it developed a viewing screen fault this summer and although it could be repaired, the cost was more than that of a new camera. My requirements were identical to yours plus I wanted a wide angle lens ( so I could take decent pictures inside our motorhome ) and especially one that was 'pocketable'. I finished up with a SAMSUNG NV24HD and I'm absolutely delighted with every aspect of it. It's so light and compact that I often forget I have it in a pocket somewhere! Even the charging and downloading facilities are compact. And it's got a Schneider lens which I'm told are 'the bee's knees' or the canine's private parts, whichever you prefer!

Our reliable but old Canon IXUS 400 sadly gave up the ghost today and we are in need of another and quick.
We like to look of the Canon Ixus 960is Digital Camera and the reviews appear to say its OK. Budget £150-200.
Basically our immediate needs are point and press, with something we can carry in our pocket.
Later we plan to buy the Canon DSLR for when we are fulltiming and actually have time to really explore the hobby further.
I've had a Canon Ixus 850IS (which I presume is the predecessor of the Ixus 950IS) for a couple of years, and find it excellent. I especially like its small size and 28mm lens at the wide end. I too was dubious about proprietary batteries, but in fact I have found them far more reliable than rechargeable AA batteries, and hold their charge much longer - so don't let proprietary batteries put you off. And you can always buy non Canon alternatives at a good price
I also have two re-chargable batteries for my Canon, never been without as yet. Don't buy the second one with the Canon badge on it, you can get much cheaper batteries elsewhere that are identical

Have a look at Olympus mju 1050 shockproof from height of 1.5m and waterproof to depth of 3m.
