OK slightly thick photography question of the day...under what circumstances is a shutter speed of 60s useful on what is basically a point and shoot compact?

I'm looking at both the Fuji F100fd - 4s and the Panasonic FX-37 - 60s.

Oh and a second question is 4s long enough to take dusk/dawn or even the odd night shot?

Thank you

Yours the photo imbecile

4 secs is fine for dusk/dawn. For night shots then it depends on how well lit the subject is. 60 secs is a very long time indeed and not really needed unless you are seriously into night photography with just the stars as a light source.

As an example I shot this 2 days ago with a speed of 2 secs, on a tripod of course!

Thanks Trevor. I thought that 60secs was a bit ridiculous on a p+s camera.

If your picture was taken with 2s then 4s is going to be more then adequate for what I want or need.

Ginge,

You have got to get a good tripod, look at the Manfrotto range.

If you have a Compact Camera then lugging around a regular tripod like a Manfrotto is overkill - in my opinion. Take a look at the link below. Covenient enought to slip into a pocket or bag and very lightweight.

Edit: make sure you use the Self Timer to avoid moving the camera, which would happen if you pressed the button yourself.

The gorrilla jobby is great but usually needs to stand on something unless you are into lying on the ground!
I carry a lightweight compact manfrotto that extends to a good usable height, cost me about £65

With a lot of casual camera users there is always someone missing from the shot - the person behind the camera. I've seen a lot a people trying to balance cameras on rocks, bags, tables, car roofs etc. Often I'll ask if I can take the shot for them.

The Gorrilla Pods are small enough to slip into a pocket but most casual users still wont want the additional cost and inconvenience of carrying one around.

Pays your money and takes your choice.
