Evil or Very Mad

Hello to anyone who is interested in this piece.

I recently purchased a new motorhome with a trade in, I thought as I was upgrading I would go the whole hog an decided to purchase a satellite system. The system I wanted included a 12V Sky box, or so I was led to believe.
During our maiden voyage we visited eurodisney and had an overnight on the south coast before heading north with friends. Whilst asleep my wife woke me at 3.00am smelling smoke, we evacuated the van with our two young children (NOTE: no smoke alarm went off to warn us as manufacturers battery had not been turned unbeknown to us).
On closer inspection in the morning the small fire on board was caused by the sky box and/or sky box power cable. When discussed and inspected by independent specialist they suggested that the problem was caused by the PACE sky box being converted from 240 to 12V and it basically fried itself. An inverter should have been fitted between power and sky box thus no alterations to the sky box.
BEWARE - Please check your sky box as I thought I had bought a 12V box not a converted box and this nearly cost us our lives. I am not sure whether we have been lucky or unlucky??????
Take care and BE safe - from Our friends up north

Hi Beasty

Welcome to MHF.

AFAIK the only 12v Sky Digibox on the market is (or rather was) the Pace 1000 Javelin, instantly recognisable due to it's very small size. Any other Digibox (not freeview, FTA or freesat box) claiming to be suitable for 12v should be treated with extreme caution as it's likely to be a DIY botch-up. Strange really as I've always believed that conversion of 240v digiboxes was completely uneconomical so why should anyone want to do it?

Many satellite receivers (notably Pace and Comax) have a reputation for getting rather hot, it's important therefore that they are disconnected whenever the van is unattended or you're asleep.
