I am looking to buy a MH built on a Ford Transit chassis with Durashift auto gearbox. Has anyone got any experience or knowledge of the Durshift system. Is it reliable? Are there any common faults? Am I better looking for a manual?
I've got a 2 year old Transit with Durashift and it's fine. Very relaxing to drive and I'd be reluctant to change it for a manual. When I first bought it I was concerned at the apparently poor reputation of this box but, after reading many posts on the Ford Transit forum I came to the conclusion that it really only applies to high mileage delivery vehicles that may not have been driven too carefully. I might be wrong but all the motorhome posts that I've seen from Durashift Transit owners are favourable.
Saying that, the warden on a Caravan Club site where I was staying had the same vehicle as us and they had a Durashift failure, but it was caused by the oil drain plug dropping out and depositing all the gearbox oil. Of coure it would have same effect if it happened on a manual box so I think (or hope) it was an isolated incident. Mine's now due for a service so I'll get the garage to check the plug!
Anyway, I wouldn't be at all concerned about buying a Transit with Durashift.
HI, I have an Autosleeper Ravenna with durashift that took an absolute age to find, I did research by talking to owners, taxi and commercial vehicle owners. Our local mobility specialist drives a transit with the durashift on it, he supports his family in their various hobbies as well as using the van for his business, he was unequivocal in his praise. You need to drive a bit differently, it needs a few revs, after 2 extensive trips to france, and a lot of UK touring I am delighted.
Mine's now 6 years old but have only done 37000 miles virtually all abroad. No problems. Met someone in France with an identical vehicle and he had done 89000 trouble free miles. I've not heard of any camper vans with gearbox problems but those on the Ford Transit forum are not fans of the Durashift box.
But these are high mileage and probably roughly treated. Apparently the Royal Mail own several hundred of them.;
My MH is a Transit Autosleeper Duetto 2005 -Durashift fitted-with 23000 on clock. Have had this MH for 18 months and covered over 13000 miles - Brilliant! Having never had much time for automatic g/boxes in past - (Over 50 years driving UK/Europe) this is very relaxing and, unusually, quite economical for a 3500kg MH. It's not a racer but a very steady plodder - holds 60-70 mph for miles and miles. Go for it!
