i have linux set top box i bought from snelly, iv'e had a few problems with it, so i need to change it, iv'e got a spare sky plus box and was wondering if its possible to get my sky card paired to this box and still use it with the one at home, thanks. dennis
Sky card can only work in one sky box, may work for a day or two.
Think Sky send a signal to check card and box are linked every couple of days, none Sky boxes just ignore the signal.
But I have heard so many tall stories about Sky Cards not sure whats true anymore!
I have a single sky card and use it in my Sky+ box at home AND my (old) Sky box in the MH.
I get all of the channels I pay for on both boxes.
To be fair the box in the MH was in the house prior to Sky+ (which was 12 months ago) so its probably paired to both.
If you want Sky in the MH why not just take your home sky box with you ???
We have Sky HD box at home and we take our card with us which works in the 12v Sky Pace digibox in the van. We receive all channels except Sky Sports. Bob Jackson told us that we would need our 240v box in order to receive Sky Sports. Don't know why. However, on our next trip to Spain (next week) we are going to take a spare 240v box with us and try it out.
I'm pretty sure that a Sky digibox holds the number of the card that it is going to work with. If you put an existing card in a new (different) box then Sky Customer Services can update this for you as long as the box is switched on. I don't think this stops the card from working in the original box since it still expects the same card number.
You could test this by connecting your spare box - ring sky and tell them your old box is being repaired and you need the card paired to the spare one. If the card then then works in both boxes - Bingo - if not put the card back in the old box and ring sky to tell them it's fixed and they will re-pair the card to the original box.
I have no idea if SKY+ will work on the spare box once the card is paired but I guess that's not a problem.
All Sky cards are paired to one Digibox (doesn't matter if it's a 240v or a 12v as long as it's a Digibox - NOT a FTA receiver).
The card can be used in any other Digibox without being paired to it but that Digibox will not receive any premium channels that the customer subscribes to (eg: movies or sports), it will receive all the other channels.
A Sky+ box should behave just the same but you will need a twin LNB in order to use the record facilities unless you're recording the program you are watching. Mobile satellite systems are not usually fitted with twin LNBs although these could be retro-fitted to most tripod mounted dishes and to some roof mounted ones.
