Just bought a maxview omnisat portable satellite kit which includes dish, leads etc but am very confused now as to what receiver is best for this set up, we are off to Cherbourg in August but spend the rest of the year in the UK, any advice welcome.

Depends on if you want to pay a monthly subscription or not. If not then just get a "freesat" box from somewhere like Currys. I looked all over the internet but they seem to be the same price everywhere.

I would not bother with a HD box as you will not see the difference on a TV with less than 32" screen. (Unless you have a huge RV of course!)

With a "freesat" box you get an EPG (Electronic programming guide) which lets you view up and coming programmes on the TV. If you buy a "free to air" receiver you do not have this feature.

Any of the Grundig, Bush Goodmans or Alba freesat HD boxes are 12Volt so will work without conversion. Although the prices are different they are identical boxes, you just pay for a percieved name.

Would these digi boxes work with a motorised set up (Oyster Vision 85cm)? I have been told I need a software upgrade on my control box,if I bought a digi box would I still need a control box to find a satellite or could I dispense with the control box altogether, connecting the digi box directly to the dish? regards, seamus.

You can buy a Sat receiver from any good sat shop or even lidl when they are on offer for 30/40£ you do need to set up the box to the motor but it will tell you how to do it in the user manual, This will get you all uk channels BBC/ITV /4-5 and hundreds more of complete crap, all FTA.
