I got one of these systems yesterday (superb bit of kit for the money I must say, especially the stb). Anyhow, I am considering the best way to use it.
Originally I was just going to leave it in its "Travel Case" until I wanted to use it and then just unpack it and set it up on the ground as required.
Now I am thinking of mounting it on the roof rack (either permanently, or preferably mounting it there as required) - have any of you set one up in such a way before, and if so any advice would be greatly appreciated as always.
Slightly different in that I have a 'Camos' dish and have the receivers mounted near the TV on a shelf with all the connections close at hand.
You will find the unit pretty good, but can guarantee that setting it up will drive you mad especially if you try to sent up more than one satellite.
Mounting is petty strightforward as long as you can supply power and get the antenna connector and 'SCART' plug to the unit.
If you are using a portable antenna then it may be worth fitting a socket somewhere near the outisde of the van, but remember that these are not waterproof.
Martin.
See my post subject "Setting up FreeSat for the first time". I'm having real problems getting mine aligned with ASTRA28EAST which is the satellite I want.
I'm sure it's me and you will have absolutely no problem.
If you are successful first time please let me know and I may have to track you down and murder you ...
Many thanks for the info. I used to be into my Satellite kit many years ago (analogue D2Mac).
I tested it on about 4 satellites yesterday and am well impressed with the channels it can drag in.
My concerns are over how best to utilise it. I don't think I would be into having to put it out manually at each new venue. Whereas, I "think", I may be able to cope having to climb the ladder and adjust it on the roof.
But I don't really want to go sticking it directly on the roof and so thought about utilising the bars of the roof rack.
If you was to do this, would you still put a socket on the outside of the van or would you route the cable direct from the box to the aerial by some means?

Hi Colonel,
I think my post was misinterpreted.
I have found all the satellites I needed with no fuss at all. Was pretty easy using the "buzzer" to zone in on the desired satellite.
My question is more about the logistics of fitting it all together on the van.
Sorry to hear your struggling with yours (I have read the thread) GOOD LUCK with yours Colonel.
A lot of our continental motorhomers leave a small dish attached to their roof rack or back ladders. Myself, id be worried about hitting something with it or it falling off totally. Id forget it was there and drive off with it standing proud!
If you leave it portable, you will be able to find an ideal position for it everytime you stop. Fix it permanently and you have to move your whole van if your line of sight is blocked.

Ian, this info is from a guy who supplies fixed systems (among others) - might be well advised to listen to what his experience, and ours, suggests.
Last week there were 2 sites where we would not have been able to get a signal from the van but were able to stretch the cable to 'the clear'.
My Makro supplied £50 system has a flat plastic plate to hold the dish and sits quite happily on the ground or van roof. 2 tins of dog food or a couple of tent pegs ( not on the roof) will hold it in a wind. A tripod will give income to the supplier and place your dish more in the wind but 1 metre nearer the satellite so in theory will give 0.00000000001% better reception.

That was something else I thought about (and I am perhaps "over engineering" this now).
My business partner makes signs that he can back with a slim magnetic backing. If I adhered one of these to the bottom of the satellite base plate, and say had something for it to stick flat to on the roof (just outside the Heiki).
