I recently changed from IE7 to Firefox as IE7 would suddenly stop working.

This now happens with Firefox. I'm connected to the web OK E mails and Skype are working but I can't get a web page.

Some times I get a box saying Firefox is running, shut it down or do a restart. I check the task manager and Firefox is not running. I do a restart and the laptop takes ages to shut down.

What I thought was an IE7 problem looks like its a Vista problem.

Is anybody else having this problem and can give me some advice please. I can do re start but it is now becoming a pain in the butt.

Regards

Don

Hi Don,

Are you connecting to the net via a Wireless Router? If so do you have an ethernet cable spare so you can try it via "hard wired" see if that makes any difference?

Do you know how to boot to safe mode?

What AV software are you running ?

Don

I thought it was just me !! - I've had a Compaq Presario laptop running Vista Home with Firefox since March 2007. and at some time during the Firefox update process (I've not taken any Vista updates since buying the laptop) I've had occasion when I've shutdown some Firefox windows that on subsequent trying to re-open Firefox I've got a message saying 'Firefox is still running" - initially to overcome this I've resorted to re-starting the laptop but now I open Task Manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL) and check into Processes and sure enough although no Tasks are running, Firefox.exe is active and gobbling up lots of time - so I kill it from the Processes window and hey-presto everything is OK - I know its not the answer - but its quicker than a re-start.

Thanks everybody.

The laptop is 4 months old.

AVG 8 free

It runs OK on other programmes.

I am on a wireless router.

I don't know what safe mode is.

Thanks for the advice.

Don

Don

Just re-read my Rioja clouded input of 40 mins or so ago ie some time during the Firefox update[I] - this should read -at some time in the past 2 years while Firefox has been updated ie I think this is a Firefox problem - the "Firefox is still running " - wasn't present in the early days of my use of the current Vista laptop

Hi Don,

As Coulstock says Firefox is a pain for leaving itself running in the processes and a Ctrl+Alt+Del, and then manually "end process" works to get it going again. I am unsure as this is the problem with yours though due to your mentioning that it also happens in IE.

You say you have checked in the Task Manager and it isn't running. Do you mean under the first tab (applications) ?

If so check under the next tab along and see if you still have a process with the "image name" - firefox running.
