Linux. is it any good for Motorhome use.

I only need to run a few programs.

I need to have a reliable internet browser, WiFi, currently use vistumbler to find a connection. with a usb gps antenna.

I'd like to be able to run Autoroute, or Mappoint. with a usb gps antenna.

I need to be able to download pictures from a couple of digital cameras. with a usb card reader

I need to be able to read word documents.

there are probably other bits I'd like to run, but they are the main ones.

I've never seen Linux or it's copies running, and I know nothing about it, but have heard it's superior to any of out Bills products.

Over to you.

See no mention of a load terminal.

Yes it is good for motorhome use but there are a few caveats.

It works fine for browsing in fact it is more secure than win/IE

Autoroute will run under emulation either VirtualBox or Wine. However you do need to know a little bit about linux to get this working. Sorry this has probably put you off.

Downloading pictures from camera is no problems. Linux has lots of free software including the excellent Gimp for image manipulation. Gimp sounds like a horrible name but it stands for Gnu Image Manipulation Program.

Open office does a better job than MS office opening word documents. It still support all the old version which MS office doens't

Linux is more stable and more secure. But the downside is you will have to get new software (but it will be free)

Not put off so far Karl.

Obviously, I'm not too sure as it's an unknown quantity, for instance, I'm not sure what needs to be done to get it onto my Laptop.

I assume I would download it, burn it to CD/DVD, then just install in the usual way.

I assume drivers are the biggest problem, as you didn't mention the USB port or the GPS antenna, or the WiFi doodah (gone brain dead for a minute) I think CD drives run out of the bios these days in order to be bootable.

I had the free cd sent to me (ubuntu linux 8.10). To get a flavour of it you can run it from the CD without installing or partitioning.
I liked it and tried to install alongside my vista system. However I found a problem with dual booting with vista. Still like the system but haven't yet resolved the dual boot problem (not brave enough yet). So I have about 40 gig of my drive allocated to Linux but I can't yet access it.
Do get the CD and try it first.

There are plenty of "distros" (jargon for Linux distributions) available that will run from a memory stick and several of the Linux magazines have been running articles on doing this recently - or there's plenty of information on the web.

If you use a reasonable sized memory stick (2gb should be more than enough), there will be plenty of room for Linux, a selection of applications and file folders. Then you can carry your operating system, software and documents wherever you like and use them on any PC that comes to hand!

This Google chrome is OK, but I do wish they'd put a proper down load window in the middle of the screen, instead of these annoying tabs at the bottom, I keep missing them, just had four downloads going at once Grrr.
