I realise that this is probably "off topic" even in this section but would be grateful if anyone know first hand how I could watch Spanish tv with SPANISH susbtitles in the UK (at home, not in MH)......???
Which dish and box would be best?
We are just back from Spain and obviously going to enquire re this, but maybe some of you have done it??
NB...The subtitles in Spanish (not English) are very important!! Thanks for reading!!

I've just checked on my van, parked at home in Bedfordshire.

My system is a Camos 40cm dish, feeding a Zehnder DX65 tuner.

There is a good signal from the Hispasat satellite and lots of Spanish channels broadcasting, even at 10am. That's the good news. The bad news is that none of them seems to have subtitles available.

At first I thought it was my lack of understanding of the system, but turning on Bob the Builder on the Astra satellite showed that English subtitles are available on BBC-2 and easy to access.

I hope that this gives you some further information in your search.

Dr (musical, not medical) Roy

Have a look at the satellites on http://www.lyngsat.com/europe.html
There should be a few on there.
Seem to remember seeing some Spanish TV on Hotbird so maybe a place to start.
Martin.

Hispasat will give you TVI, TeleMadrid, AragonTV, Galicia (Gallego), TVE (Catalan), TVCanarias and TVB (Basque). Not sure about the subtitles though - will try when I get home.

I need Spanish subtitles as I can READ Spanish a whole lot easier than I can understand the "spoken word"...ok if slow but it's mostly FAST!! Rolling Eyes
It helps me know what expressions can be used and increases my vocab in a natural way!
Would be grateful if anyone can further advise....??
What I find is that once you return to UK, you gradually drop your "studies"!! Watching tv with subtitles is a nice lazy way!! Razz

We've had a whopping great satellite hidden in a gutter on the roof for the past umpteeen years which we use to watch - among others- Spanish TV via the Hotbird satellite ( ie free). I have never seen English subtitles and AFAIK the subtitles for any TV programme have to be put on at source - ie by the Spanish programme makers in this case. I can't see why they should do this.

I enjoy the cookery programmes best. You can see what is going on so don't need too much help and you learn an awful lot of food-related vocabulary - very handy when eating out in Europe. There are quite a lot of Italian programmes for children in English with Italian added- they're quite helpful- and you can watch the Euronews in a language of your choice; useful as you very likely know the gist of the news anyway. There are also English /American films which have the the language of the country whose TV you are watching.

If you want to watch Spanish tv to improve your Idioma Espana its best without your mother tongue, As the translation is not always true , dont forget there is more than one way to speak Espanol , Tv is a good way to learn .
