Hi all,
Recently bought a 1996 Iveco Daily 35.8 2.5 N/A - this is probably the first of many questions!

Went to check the oil and it looks like the very lowest part of the dipstick has sheared off!
There is a large ball near the bottom of the stick then the flat portion (which I thought would have some kind of level markings) only extends about a centimeter from the ball. The join of the two also looks a bit gold, as if it's been brazed??
Can anybody tell me what it should look like or take a photo of theirs?
Cheers
James

On my '98 2.8 the dipstick is mostly a long spring. Only the end bit is flat with max/min markings.

It measures (from the bottom of the red plastic handle) about 64cm to the end of the spring and 71cm to end of the flat bit.

No brazing in sight...

Chris

I had EXACTLY the same thing happen with my dipstick, it sheared at the 'brazed' section!!

When put put the new dipstick in, you will feel a little bit of an obstruction during the last inch or so of travel. I think it is caused by a 'little ledge' between the block and sump. I reckon it is this that caused the dipstick to shear...

Don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but I ended up having to drop the sump to get the broken piece out, and what a job THAT was!!

I'd be getting a new one to compare it with, side by side, if they look the same, and the full/low marks are not at the very bottom of the stick, I think I'd be inclined to cut the end bit off, so long as it measures the level any extra is wasted, (sounds familiar that)

Kev.

Yep, might not be a bad idea...

I would still be inclined to get the broken piece out of the sump though. I know there's a metal gauze which should catch and secure it, and I know it's too big to be drawn into the oil pick up, but the crankshaft is partially 'splash fed' by oil, and I would be concerned that it could get thrown up into the 'big end'. Probably too small and soft to do any major damage, but why take the risk?

You mayget lucky and it'll 'wash' it's way to the sump plug on the next oil change. That would save you a lot of hasstle.....
