Hi Nerds,
I have an HP laptop with Vista installed and keep on getting a message - Word (or some other programme) has stopped working. Then up pops a mesage - windows is investigating the cause. The next message is - there is an incompatability problem with your printer, HP are aware of this and are working on a solution. Next appears another message - there is a work-around, take your printer off line. (or words to that effect). This has been going on for over 12 months.
Anyone know of a solution to this 'problem' as it's becoming a real pain.
The printer is an HP Photosmart C4200 series. I dont want to change it as it does all I need very well, and why should I pay out to overcome a long running software problem.
Regards,

I have the same problem running Vista with a HP Photosmart printer.
HP are supposed to be working on a solution but are taking a long time.

A temporary fix is to set a different make of printer as the default printer, any one will do as long as it is not a HP,then you will no longer get the pop up message. It just means you have to manually choose your HP printer model on printer preferences every time you use it.

In some cases printer and scanner drivers are provided as a windows (Vista) update.
However to access them all current drivers for the item have to be deleted.
When they are deleted connect the item, switch it on, and go to the windows update site and see if it offers a driver in the form of a normal update.
With Vista many drivers are loaded automatically and the manufacturers disc/drivers are not required.

HP and Vista have never got it together.

Guess what?? Windows/HP have released in the last week an "important update" to resolve a 'Windows/HP printer conflict'! Seeing that they have known of the problem for over a year, I do not think it was very far up the priority list. Anyway, update was uploaded and problem appears to be resolved so no more mucking around every time I want to use the printer.

Good news at last BJT.
Do you know if it's an automatic update or do we have to seek it out?

Ray.

Automatic as far as I am aware. You can check manually for updates if your PC is not configured for automatic search, the PC will advise you if the update has been uploaded already. Can't remember the exact procedure, try windows updates from your browser, or from windows home page.
