Having had several point and shoot digital cameras, I would now like to move up to a DSLR. I have narrowed the choice down to two units and would be grateful for any advice from the more informed. My photography interests are varied but I do have countless blurred shots of the grand children who race around at great speed and probably just as many from walking the mountains of Cumbria and Wales. The two cameras’ are:
a. Sony DSLRA350K Camera (14.2 MP) with 18-70mm lens, and
b. Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1 with 14-45mm lens

The Panasonic should be best described as a Bridge camera as it is not a true single lens reflex camera. Its small form is not tried by the major camera manufacturers and may not give the results of a true DSLR. It is possible that if you have large hands you may struggle to hold it as steady as a DSLR.
Price is high compared to established models and lens is very expensive.
Just my opinion, not based on usage.

Hi Pilgrim,

Just another thought, have you looked at the Olympus range? I know they now do SLRs and, being Olympus, they are usually kept quite small.

I agree with the earlier comments.

I too am very interested in the G1, but it's a bit too soon on at least two counts.

a). It's too new. As far as I know this is the first camera to use this technology, and as Gerry says, they may not get it quite right at the first attempt.

b). It's too expensive. The price will tumble when other manufacturers start competing.

Have a look at the Pentax range of DSLRs. For some reason they are less well known on the "High Street", but they always get cracking reviews, are smaller than most, and (IMO) as good as any - at the price.

On those grounds you won't like this either, Dave, but intriguing nonetheless:

IF you are only picking from the two models... my money is on the SONY.

It's a cracking DSLR and I nearly bought one.... why nearly you say...

...well I've a few canon lenses from my film SLR camera and didn't want to junk them... so I bought a canon body EOS 350.

The sony is very well spec'd and image quality is also very good.

in-depth review

get it bought!

>> This << is quite a good site for camera reviews.

Being American, the models numbers don't always coincide with the European ones, but it's not usually too difficult to sort out.
