Hello Folks
The Trojan I got on my computer seems to have come down through Firefox.
It got to the stage that I could not open up my Yahoo emails as a Casino pop up blocked me each time I tried, so, I have uninstalled it.
I did re-install to see if it made any difference but was just the same so have taken it off altogether.

I would like to have another browser, apart fro IE, but do not know which
one would best.

Any one any opinions?

Advice gratefully received.

Sandy

Well, in my opinion, Firefox is generally better than IE, but you might also like to try Google Chrome.

as for stopping trojans, it's not really your browser that is the issue, it's your choice of operating systems... I use Ubuntu Linux, but Macs are pretty good too.

Hi Sandy

I presume you're on a PC, not a Mac? There are a number of browsers, but quite a lot of them are based on IE.

If you're dead set against Microsoft, try Safari for Windows >> LINK << or Opera >> LINK <<. I've used both.

The danger with moving away from IE is that a number of websites are only checked for proper function in IE, and there are sometimes compatibility issues with other browsers. Having said that, I'm on Safari 3.2.3 on Mac (there's an upgrade to Safari 4 pending), and I can't think of any website that doesn't work properly on it. This didn't used to be the case, and I used to have IE installed on a Mac 'just in case'.

You could also try Google Chrome >> LINK <<, but I don't know if it's any good.

Gerald

I'm not sure alternative browsers would have cured your problem. When using a Windoze PC, I use Firefox as my default browser. (On the Mac I use Safari or Firefox.)
Just a few thoughts on Firefox security. Did you have it set to block pop-ups and prompt you whether or not to accept cookies each time one tries to install itself? Tedious I know, but it gives you an idea of what sort of sites are trying to access you. You can of course define trusted sites (like MHF) so you do not have to click "accept" every time. Also, it is worth downloading a Firefox Extension called NoScript (available from the Tools / Addons option - then search for extensions). This prevents sites running scripts on your PC unless you specifically permit them. Scripts can contain harmful programs.

If you are intent on changing from Firefox, you could try any / all of the following: Safari for PC (It's the Apple default browser); Opera; Chrome from Google. I have no experience of using the last two.

Another tip-

If you decide to stick with Firefox, there's an add-on called WOT (Web Of Trust) which gives a simple, clear visual indication of the trustworthiness of the site. Very worthwhile, as it greatly helps against visiting sites which others have found to be dangerous.

There is generally nothing wrong with any of the well known browsers.
Different browsers don't start or solve problems, only PC users start and hopefully solve problems.

Thank you for all your replies. I think I did not explain myself properly - nothing new there - ask hubby. what I meant to say was the Trojan only occurred in Firefox not IE.

From what I could gather rambling through the web it must have come down with a PDF I opened and seems to have stuck around in my Yahoo Email, no matter what I did I could not be rid of the little blighter.

Everything is fine on IE, and I do not mind it as a browser, but I do like to have a ¨spare¨ just in case.

I had Opera many moons ago and it was OK, I wanted to know what new ones were about to try, and hear it from people who had used them rather than one of the lists you get when Googling Browsers.

Thank you again.
Sandy Very Happy

Hello Castaway.

If you are still interested in browsers the OPERA is now at version 9.6 and I have had no problems with this, or any earlier versions over the past 5 Years.

I also use IE7 and thats been OK, so far, too.

Got to agree with the majority of posts here, Precautions taken such as a quality anti-virus solution and firewall will greatly reduce the chance of trojan infection and your browser choice has very little to do with infection. Clean your computer by carrying out a virus scan with an up to date anti-virus program, download an anti spy tool such as "Spybot search and Destroy and do a full check, clear all data from firefox and uninstall firefox, restart your computer and re-install the latest version.

Best Regards,

Mark
