I'm with with virginmedia and p[aying 14.99 a month, my speed is 54mps which when I try to play iplayer, i am told that this is not fast enouchl if I opt to download it takes hours. Any suggestion? I have been with them for 2 year and there website is trash! As is this Acer 5520 when I am trying to email and the curser jumps all over the place! I would like to throw it in the bin, (there is=t goes again) what am I doing wrong and surely I can get a better deal than virginmedia-iplayer is useless on 54mps. Any help please, Wendyu
It all depends on your telephone line - 1st step is to get it checked for the maximum speed available. I have just migrated to BT and my surfing is much quicker than what was on offer from my previous supplier!

It sounds like two different networks are being confused here, you haven't given details but i am assuming you wirelessly connect to your router and that your broadband is supplied by virginmedia through the phone line as opposed to cable. the 54 mb/s is the speed between your pc and the router, essentially it is the speed of your private network which has nothing to do with the internet. the second network is the public network which your routers second interface is connected to, which is the internet through the phone line. your internet connection from the router is the bottleneck as 54mb/s is plenty fast enough for streaming media. go to a website such as www.thinkbroadband.com where they have a connection speed test facility to determine the actual internet connection speed, do this several times over a period of time to get an average.
the best isp there is is Zen internet but you pay a premium, they are excellent, fast and reliable 24/7 365 days a year, year in year out.
lgbzone is right, the 54mbps is the speed of your wireless router, which is perfectly fast enough for any application that you want to throw at it.
What you need to check is the actual download speed through your broadband line. Try these for speed tests:

As for who is best, I don't believe it is possible to answer that. It would depend on where you are, what type of line you have and your personal preferences. BTW, if you are using Virgin cable then your choice is totally restricted unless you are prepared to have a new copper line installed.

If it is a home network you are needing then the fastest system is direct connection to the hub otherwise a wireless 'N' Draft running upto 300mbps which also depends on the location. The other advcantage is that it is backwood compatible with 'B'/'G' systems. I have an 'N' router but my connrction speed is 54mbs ie the fastest that 'G' can connect but my main computer conects at 115mbs - hope that helps
