Hi Computer buffs,

Looking for some assistance please.

My few months old laptop running Vista Business has developed a rather annoying problem.

When I turn it on, it appears to start up quickly but when I attempt to run any programme I get the circular timer then nothing happens. This includes trying to shut it down which sometimes it does nothing and other times the screen goes black with a white cursor that still moves. I then have to press the power button to get it to shut down, start it up and try again.

This morning it took four attempts to get it running!

I am running Panda anti virus Global Protection 2009.

Any ideas?

Best regards

Chris

I had a similar problem with our desk top. Only way round is a full system restore. We found a repair didn't cure the problem.

You are given the option to make a back up disc - don't expect programmes you have downloaded to remain operational however, the providers can be contacted and will reinstate anything that isn't still there.

System restore will take a few days though! But will restore it to factory settings, plus any info that you have put onto disc. We wary in case of viruses though, as you will put them back on as well!

Mine does a similar thing. It's a few months old and recently began to play up. It's an HP running Vista home premium with Service Pack 1 , Exprorer 7 and AVG 8.

It will work quite happily for a while then a window will hang with the circular timer cons tantly turning. If I click on another window the same thing happens until nothing's accessible. It won't bring up Task Manager and all I can do is power off.

I've been trying to work out whether it happens only when Explorer is running but as I rarely do anything on it without Explorer I'm no further on.

Sometimes it does it after being booted up, sometimes after it's been left with the lid closed and sometimes when I've been working on it for a while - I haven't managed to establish a pattern.

It was doing it a lot for a while but over the last few days it's been ok until now. It's happened twice since last night.

Is it Vista? IE7? Or what?

And did I ? Of course not - I didn't work in IT for nothing Embarassed Embarassed

I do have my Vista key (through jellybean) and a friend with the same laptop and more sense than me has made backup disks. How machine-specific are they? Would I be able to use his or would HP provide me with some?

Thanks Steve. For the moment I'll leave it as it's not too bad, but when I have time and have plucked up the courage.......

Don't panic - when you go for full restore, the computer will give you the option to make a back up disc! Once that is done, it will wipe everything - but not until your disc is done.

Press Ctrl Alt and Del at the same time to bring up task manager. Have a look to see what percentage of CPU usage you are using. Also could be a lot of spyware slowing you down. Install Spybot to clean unwanted programs.

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies.

Hi Boringfrog,

Trying to do ctrl alt and del does exactly the same! Brings up the circular timer and then nothing!

Hope I don't have to re format and install that would really annoy me!

Regards

Chris

Same with mine, it won't bring up task manager, just the circular timer.

I will get round to reinstalling one day if it becomes too annoying. I'd just like to know whether it's a Vista problem, IE7 problem, IE7 under Vista or something completely different. It bugs me that I don't know.
