I would update to Vista service pack 2, and also download Firefox browser and try that instead of I.E 7 (i.e 8 is out now also).

I've just downloaded IE8 and the whole thing has become corrupted necessitating use of the recovery disk. Its been an absolute nightmare. Think twice before using IE8.

I have IE8 all over the place as it comes via Windows Update (I made a positive choice as I don't just let WU blast stuff onto my systems).

Not had any problems so far - I seem to have spent very little time using IE7 - but YMMV.
