Hi All.

We are using C&CC Wifi while on site at canterbury. If I am browsing the net typing an Email or even typing a post on MHF I find I am logged off after about 5-6 mins, so when I go to send I loose the text I have typed, and I am a slow typer. Our laptop runs windows XP. I have looked in the net settings but cannot find where I can extend the time I am allowed to browse the net. I am sure I did find this setting once, but now cannot.

Could anyone tell me in very simple terms how I would find this setting as I am fed up with resigning in every 5 mins when typing a post.

Many thanks.

Having never used wifi at a cc or ccc club i would guess you have to log in with a user name and password, if thats correct then its not a problem on your computer.

Basically the system used to administer users is also capable of keeping track of clients usage and keeping track of time limits, if for example they charged by the hour they would have a measure in place that checks to see the last time the mac address (your wifi card) made a transmission, if after so many minutes it had not heard from the client it would log you off ie to save keep charging you when you had in fact shut done and gone off to do something else. Its a very good thing to have but can obviously be a pain for people like you who use online e-mail systems.

Suggestions

1/ I would personally not use online e-mail, set-up outlook or outlook express to download and send your e-mail, that way you can compose off line and just connect to do a send and receive. Thats my default way but its up to you.

2/ use notepad to type the e-mail off-line then go on-line and copy - paste it into the online e-mail, or do it backwards type the e-mail, post on here then just before hitting send do ctrl + A to select all text then ctrl + C to copy it to clipboard then if it has timed out just connect again and hit ctrl - V to paste the text back into it. I do this very often if i have made a long post of instructions like this, just in case their is a problem posting, that way if you do time out you have not lost your hard work.

3/ Get a AIM program like messenger, the pings from the program should keep the client connected as the server pings the program every few seconds to determine your status, but be careful with this idea if your paying on a time basis as it will obviously keep your connection open all the time its running until you shut down.

Hope this go's some way to explain / help your situation.

Kevin

Hi Tinky.

Thanks to your suggestions. I will give your third suggestion a try.
We have got an unlimited usage as we have signed up for 1 years use. This was the cheapest way to go as we are in the UK for the next year and will only be using C&CC Sites. £125.00 for 1 years WiFi.
