Hi everyone
I recently had a guy out to overhaul my very old PC and also to set up my new Acer Laptop. I am with BT for Broadband and have a new Home Hub. My laptop will not always connect wirelessly from the living room (hub is in the study) and the engineer chap tells me it could be the BT router as he has had a few problems with them in the past.

He removed AVG V8.5 and installed Avast on both machines again saying that version slowed down the speed of the internet browsing and connections. (I have since removed Avast because it seemed to be causing the connection problems).

So....Any thoughts on BT routers (home hub)
Any thoughts on AVG v.8.5 against Avast.

At the moment I have no protection on either machine and neither of them are running particularly well although laptop will now connect OK if in kitchen. Study is about 30ft away and 3 walls to get through. Kitchen is closer.

When I went Wi-Fi I changed my router.
6 months later it wouldn't work....but.....the indicator lights gave a few clues....the suppliers sent me a new one.
I also have a home hub which I have never used (in reserve!).
Generally I have never heard of faulty routers or BTs hubs.

Avast is widely recommended over AVG at the moment!?

We have the BT HomeHub and have our PC at the front of the bungalow attached by cable to the Hub.

We have had a FujitsuSiemens laptop now 4 years old which refused to link wirelessly to the hub but has also refused to link to other wi-fi connections.
10 days ago we bought a Toshiba Satellite laptop which picked up and immediately connected to the hub from about 10m away in the living room.

It also connects to the hub with a strong signal strength from the summer house in the garden which is about a further 15/20m away.

Our Hub is the older white model not the more recent and more powerful Black model.

By the way, get some protection on your computers.
FWIW we use Bullguard and it covers up to 3 computers for about 50p a week.
Used it now for 3 years and very satisfied.
Computers cost a lot of money and I can't see the point of arguing about the merits of free against expensive(?) internet security software at about £25-£30 a year.

Well the nice engineer guy came back and spent another couple of hours here this afternoon. He re-installed Avast as he was so confident in it and was convinced it wasn't causing the problems and he agreed it is much superior to AVG at the moment.

He suspected the channel the BT Home Hub (Black one) had selected might be the problem as he bought his own Acer netbook here and tried to connect to our hub with it and no luck. The search showed that our neighbour is using same/similar setup as us and he said if they are on same channel it could be causing problems. I sort of understood what he was saying at the time but trying to repeat it here now I could be repeating incorrectly....but that was the gist.

Anyhoo.....he selected another channel and Bingo all fired up nice and quick no problems.

So at the moment we have our ancient PC and our lappy both working and able to use the laptop in the living room wireless.

I'm keeping everything crossed that all goes well now Rolling Eyes

I must say there was no way either of us could have done what this guy did and he explains it all to us and shows us everything he does so we know what he has touched etc.

Thanks for the advice and info.

Maura
