Would someone please explain to me what the difference is particularly between 'Hibernating' my laptop or 'turning it off'. Standby I understand, it switches it off temporarily whilst power is still consumed by the mains/battery. Hibernation appears to do the same as turning it off as the power is disconnected and the computer shuts down so what is the difference between hibernating and switching off please.
(Whew! That was hard work).

Turn off is just that all power gone. Any programs running are closed down and potentially data lost. I say potentially as most would ask "do you want to save" but you would have to be quick in the answer.

Hibernate is similar but will save the current running programs temporarily to the hard disk so that on restart you will see the same programs still running and data still intact. Warning, I have one program that does not fully wake up and connect to the data on restart up so its worth doing a few tests before relying on it. I tend to use this methods during the day as it is faster to restart.

Hope that helps.

Keith

Hi WhiskyGolf

When the computer hibernates it first saves a file that contains all the data necessary to restart the computer in exactly the same state as when you set it to hibernate. If you are half way through writing a new version of War and Peace in a word document this can be very useful. Any web pages that are open will be still there ...in fact it will be just as it was before ...quite handy. Wink

Why would you use it.... well, one reason is that it will close down and start up much faster using hibernate than it does from a complete shut down and of course if the computer is a laptop it can be carried around safely while hibernated but will come alive very much faster and ready to go than if it was switched off. This is very useful if you give presentations from a laptop or if like me you use it in the van for route planning and navigating.
Whilst hibernated it consumes no power so in the laptop that saves the battery and in a desktop it helps save the world Wink .

In the Power options in "Control Panel" you can arrange that the laptop goes into hibernation when you close the lid...on the desktop you can set it to hibernate if you press the on/off button once quickly... again very handy....it shuts down really quickly and will start up fast when you need it.

If you do start to use hibernate I do suggest that once a week or so you do a normal shutdown.

Mike

Thank you gentlemen. Generally I do hibernate most night and as you say shut the whole thing down every few days.
I finished re-writing War and Peace last week so I don't have a problem there!! Start o the Bible next week.

Thanks again

Bill
