Just how do internet search engines work?

My question is prompted by the fact that I have my Hymer B574 advertised for sale at the moment, currently here on MHF and also on Motorhomes Mobi.

Yesterday, a Google search picked up the MHF ad on page one and the Motorhomes Mobi on page three. Today it is on the first page but the MHF one is nowhere to be found.

Any ideas?

Hi

simplified a search engine has a huge database, it then uses software to connect to websites on the internet, much the same as internet explorer would, however instead of displaying the html, the search engine software (bot), runs through the contents of the pages and indexes them in its database, hence when you do a search, it's the database that is searched and you get your results quickly.

to an extent websites can control how they are searched, a file can be placed in the root of the website named 'robots.txt', the idea is that this file will contain the directories and files that the search engine can index, however if the website is not secured there is nothing to stop the search engine indexing any pages that are available to the public. obviously any pages that need the viewer to login to view them can't be indexed. could your ad have been moved to a members only page?

search results are also influenced by people that are prepared to pay for their link to be higher in the list, a sponsored link, or a blatant advert.
