Just switched on PC and found 7 messages in my inbox which I thought were suspect.
4 were delivery status notification - failure message
3 were an out of office reply from people I don't know.
I have blocked all of them but how very annoying to get this sort of spam mail. What do they hope to gain by it. The failed message ones were all sent to one of my current email addresses but the others were sent to a variety of names....none of them mine
Just how do they get through to me when not even addressed to me.
Ooh....it makes me sooooo cross

What may have happened is that your email account has been hacked into. The hackers may then be sending emails supposedly from you to others in your address book and more random others.
You might find your email contacts have received emails from you offering them electronic goods or medications to increase, err, performance.
Ask your email contacts if this is the case and change your email password.

This happened to me a few years ago. The day I was leaving for 6 months in the states AOL closed down my e-mail address. Couldn't access anything.
Took hours on the phone finding out that because so much 'spam' had been generated from my address, AOL had closed it.
Apparently it was a Canadian meds company but I could see their toll free phone number.
While in the states I dialled their number from every phone booth I could find and left the handset off the hook. I then informed them if my e-mail address was ever hyjacked again I would continue doing this.
So far so good.
It transpired that AOLs own IM (Instant Message service) had supplied my password when asked.???
Ask your email contacts if this is the case and change your email password.
Bob
Hi Bob
Is a change of password all that's necessary?
I assumed you would have to change your email address to escape from existing spammers??
If it's only the password that needs changing that's dead easy.
(Never really thought about it before, but I'm getting the "offers" recently too.)
Dave
Dave I think somebody has worked out the password maybe using a program that works out wht the password is. If they have hacked in then changing the password to a more secure one should lock them out again.
Example of an easy password father mother motorhome
Exmple of a secure password faTher1 motHER! 1motorhome2
So then it looks like someone has hacked into one of my accounts and is sending emails out to all and sundry all over the world and that is why I'm getting these odd replies?
If I change the password will that stop it?
Thanks for any help.....not had this happen before.
Also how can you stop this happening?

It is unlikely that someone has hacked for email account. What has probably happened is someone has spoofed your email address.
It is extremely easy to "spoof" the "From Address" on emails and this is most likely what has happened.
If you still have the emails right click on one of them and click on Options and the Header should be displayed - copy and paste the header onto a PM for me and I'll check it for you.
The replies are automated replies from either the recepient's ISP or the person's mailbox (OOR - Out of Office Reply).
You can't stop these OORs but you can stop the spoof mail being delivered by using SPF (or similar). You'll need to contact your ISP to set this up for you.
