I have a four year old Linksys WAD54G wi-fi router that has become unreliable.
The ADSL LED regularly fails to light up and it can take over 30 minutes switching power off and on at the wall to obtain the line to the WWW.
I have just been handed a free Netgear DGB111G router by a colleague who bought it and has no need.
I'm an IT numptie.
Please can you tell me whether I can switch off power to the Linksys router in the study upstairs, and connect and install the Netgear router from the hall telephone line.
My thinking being if I screw up the installation of the Netgear I can simply turn on the Linksys and connect that way, abeit with the irritating 30 minute fiddling of the power switch.
So it's a Modem and Router - you need to make a note of user name and password etc that was provided by your ISP to put into the Netgear (which is a very good piece of gear) - you will not do any harm - you either connect or not

I've made a note of all the required required information, including the user name and password, just as you recommend, but having read (most) of the 175 page manual last night, I became nervous and put the box away until some kind soul replied.
Just to try and save you possibly from having to do all that, have you connected the original Lynksys modem router to the master phone socket, I have found this can make a difference in certain circumstances.
As has already been said, if this makes no difference then carry on and set up you can then choose which and when to use them.
Thanks for your kind suggestion cabby; I must admit that I have previously tried using the master phone socket and the Linksys was just as erratic.
It's been getting steadily worse for a period of months. Earlier this week I googled the model (and fault) and found reported cases of ADSL connectivity problems due to heat.
It's a bit late to start playing with the new router tonight; A job for tomorrow evening with a fresh head.
I had a similar problem with my D-Link setup but now that have joined the ranks of BT the trouble has seems to have gone away so it looks like equipment at fault! Other iinformation you may have to glean is the type of connection in the way od encapsulation eg PPPoA or PPP over ATM etc, Multiplexing and VPI/VCI but your ISP should help you with that

Hello again RichardJames,
Well............it's going well for a numpty...........
I've just got connectivity through the Ethernet, and this is the first note to prove it.
All I've got to do now is continue the rest of the installation using the175 page manual, get the connection wirelessly, and install the firewall.
You should have a firewall in windows - sometimes having 2 firewalls can cause problems - I just use AVG and windows firewall. Anyway well done and give yourself a pat on the back - as long as the channels are the same ie wireless card and router the rest should be a doddle

Thanks again for your suggestion about the firewall duplication - I've just checked, and yes, the windows firewall is already on.
Good job you're keeping an eye on me.
I think I'll celebrate with a nice cup of tea, and sit in the garden for a wee while......... Just been walking the dog, and it's a beautiful evening here.
Thanks again for the support, without it, I'd still be putting things off.....
