I have bought loads over the years but, as I explained to my wife only a week ago, I acccidently ordered a HD flash drive camcorder which at the time was no big deal.
However, if anyone needs excuses to get one, these were mine and mostly I only found out about these things when I tried it out.
1...On reflection, I think this is the cheapest I have bought a camcorder since I started buying them. (One accident after another). Half the price of my previous Sony handicap and Sony M2 or 3 I cannot remember.
2. It is smaller and 75% lighter than my Lumix so I can carry this around without feeling I am lugging it. Digital zoom goese to 1000 x I think which is ridculous and useless but a handy 16 optical.
3.. Many innovatons inc. 3 x cmos, Inteliigent something or other and handshake that does not reduce pic qualtiy. Takes pics while you video if you are weird and has a 360 deg lcd touchscreen. USB2 which I wish was firewire, has mini HDMI for direct TV and load of other things. Comes without pluggable SDHC cards so it won't work if you don't buy one and the best ones to get for speed and reliablity are those that are Class 6 AND are 133.
Point is, if you were thinking of getting a new one, have a look at the Panasonic SM10. Awesome. Oh! Quality is unbelieveable on my PC and TV. Seen nothing like it before.
Pusser, like you I have had them all. From the shoulder mounted Sony through the analogue and then digital handicam and currently a JVD HDD camcorder. I always find them a faff to get out and start using as I always have a still camera in the other hand.
Might have me a look at the solid state HD camcorders, but I am a bit put off as some of the alleged HD camcorders use interpolation to achieve "1080p" and show all sorts of artefacts on a large TV. Have read about the Panachronic and it appears to provide true 1080.
Sorry, but personally I wouldn't touch any AV product with a modern Toshiba label on it.
Gerry
Panasonics claim full 1080p but when I plug my SD9 straight into my 1080p TV it only reports 1080i When I spoke to Panasonic about this they tried to tell that it actually records in 1080p and if I copy to their, rather expensive recorder, it will play back in 1080p Some try to claim full HD is 1080 x 1440 - for a wide screen maybe but I don't think so
The toshy S10 is a great bit of kit - just point and shoot - very few gimicks except a terrific battery life

Happy Holidays to everyone for 2012
The above is only a personal opinion

I cannot find the Panasonic SM10 listed anywhere!
I am interested as I am doing a Paraglide from Col De Forclaz for charity in a couple of weeks and looking for something to record it on other than my Mobile (NOKIA N95).
Pros. I have never seen home video at that quality. Size, Weight. Ease of use. The software is basic but simple to use and functional for me
Cons: WIth my fat hands it is a little to y so I will have to be careful using it. USB2 instead of firewire. You have to add on the cost of an SDCH card. I bought a pair of these to get on with. http://www.ebuyer.com/product/146940
The software is limited to doing things. i.e. It can burn to blueray unit, or to flash card or to normal but enhanced DVD using mpeg 2 I think or it may be a choice.
YOu cannot manually drag vid files from cam to PC using explorerer for example. I have just ordered, but not only for this, Premier Elements which does all the HD and Av????? stuff and also I can upload my digital old home movies to blueray and I think soon be able to get them all on one or two B\ray disks.
