Just back after a fairly extensive coverage of the country and thought I ought to report our findings on the wildcamping situation. We were very nervous about it as we were told by various campsites and local tourist info centers that it is not allowed. But as reported by some others on this site, the law preventing occupying a motor vehicle during the night was repealed in 2008. And it's up to each area/community to make their own rules. If they don't make a rule then it's totally allowed. There is a list referenced by someone on this site as to which areas have made their rules. Not wanting to trust any list we finally tracked down some local police in Edam. Basically their attitude, in fact they didn't really know what the rules where, was that if you are parked in a spot that does not block traffic or pose some danger or in a place illegal to park in general and you are not obviously camping, no bbq out etc. they won't bother you. So we did end up doing some wildcamping and no one bothered us. On the other hand there are a lot of mini camps that don't charge too much and do make one feel a bit more secure.

Were heading over there next week for a few nights, although booked on a camp site our intention was to use the time to find other locations for future visits.

Anywhere worth visiting while we are their? We are staying just outside of Amsterdam and would prefer to visit places within walking, bus, train or cycling routes not to far afield.

Hope you had a great time its one of my favourite places.
