At the moment we have a burster 747 tag axle - we have a scooter rack mounted on the tow bar, the all up weight of the rack & the scooter is 175kg - Does anyone have any idea of the weight that can be carried on a twin axle rear wheel drive Iveco Chassis. You seem to be able to get information on load you can carry in the van, and work out what you can tow, but no info on weight you can carry on scooter racks.

The actual weight on the tow bar - Doesn't that sort of info come from the tow bar manufacturer?

Then applying Dave's rules on overhang, axle weight etc. will determine the rest.

Indeed so. However, all is not lost with a underspec towbar. Mine was under 100kgs and so I was prepared to pay for a beefier one, but once you have decent scooter rack engineers look at it, a strengthing bar simply welded in means it is quite happy with nearly a 200kg load (150kg scooter and 35+kg rack).

The problem with low spec towbars is usually one of twisting about an axis parallel with the rear axle. Preventing that twisting with a fore-aft bar under compression solves the problem. The standard fixing points and long rear hangers are plenty strong enough.
