I wonder if anyone else has had a similar problem to this.
My son in law noticed a leak under the front of the van and checked the radiator expansion bottle for me and it was empty. He filled it up, we could see no water leaking, I drove about 20 miles and checked the radiator level the next afternoon and it was empty, unfortunately I forgot to check it that morning so if it had leaked onto the drive it would have evaporated.
I topped it up with 3 litres of water and took it to my local garage. They had the engine running for most of the afternoon and the water level dropped, but no leaking onto the floor. They say they have checked it for leaks but cannot access to test the pressure inside the bottle. The temperature is the same all over the radiator. They are puzzled and can only suggest that I drive it around some more and keep checking the level in case it was an airlock - could one just appear and then disappear?
I have had the van a year and must admit that I have not regularly checked the water level, but certainly have not found it to be empty before.
I would prefer not to change the radiator if there is no reason to, but would like some peace of mind when travelling.
Thanks for your reply, not knowing much about engines - wouldn't there be any other symptoms - or shouldn't the mechanic have been able to ascertain that?

there is a device that sniffs the coolant and detects if any gases are coming from engine into coolant, this will confirm if you head gasket is ok.or not . saw this this being used on english mobile mechanics on tele.
The head gasket can in certain circumstances go without affecting the running of the engine,more likely that the head has cracked into the exhaust port and the water is blowing out of the exhaust. The previous poster is correct you can get something to sniff the exhaust although im not sure where. If there is absolutely no external leakage removal of the head for specialised testing is your only answer.

I spoke to a garage about doing a "sniffer test" and he couldn't do it for a week, I then asked the garage that had it for the afternoon and they said yes they could do it, but they didn't want me spending too much money (wow, I was impressed) he suggested first of all changing the pressure cap on the radiator, this I did and (touch wood, fingers crossed and everything else) it appears to have put an end to my disappearing water.
I am taking her away for a couple of days and will be praying that it stays fixed
