Have a look at your cookies files - they can eat up alot of hard disc. I save all my files to drive 'D' so as not to 'fill' the programme partition - do a defrag

Happy Holidays to everyone for 2012
The above is only a personal opinion
I'd be trying to think what I did with both comps yesterday.
Then I'd go looking for the problem.
Start in Docs and Settings then Right click and the "properties" will tell you the folder useage. And look for the heavy disc useage
If you have got a virus or a worm, removing and then reinstalling the anti virus software which let it in will not help, try another AV program such as AVGFREE (google it) or do an online virus scan
As mentioned earlier computers keep a copy of all web pages visited to provide faster access the next time. These are stored in temporary files and can build up to be sizeable so every now and again run a free program like CCleaner which will remove
Have two laptops - within same day - the C drive has gone from 1/3 free space to almost full.
Laptop 1 - XP Professional no Windows updates.
Laptop 2 - XP Home has Windows updates.
Both have Avast Antivirus - update automatically
Both being used mainly for Word documents and on Laptop 2 Internet.
Done disk clean, CHKDSK, temporary files and all that stuff. On both ran Tune Up and everything in order program and registry wise.
'Extra' seems to reside in Documents and Settings.
Could it be the Avast Antivirus and should I remove and re-install?
Thanks
Keith
Try doing a search click START-SEARCH then in the window ALL FILES AND FOLDERS then click WHEN WAS IT MODIFIED - SPECIFIC DATES and enter the date the disk became full the click the search button.
You may then be able to identify the file(s) that are filling the disk.
I use Tune Up so I knew the basics were OK - Defrag, history, cookies etc.
On one computer found 1.5 Gb of Windows update backup and some TMP files in Word.
On the little ASUS (no updates and no System Restore) and all data on E:drive drilled down following large files from C through Docs&Settings; Me as Operator; Apps Data; Microsoft; Word to find four huge TMP files added when multiple crash closures occurred when my wife was adding photos to a word document. This was despite Word running off the E:\ drive.

Hi
I'm not sure if you're aware but if you go to Tools > Internet options on the internet explorer menu, the general tab of the window that opens has a 'temporary internet files' section that allows full control of temporary internet files, this includes deleting files, cookies and offline content, the 'settings' section also allows control of where they are stored (it will move them for you) and how much disk space they can occupy, by default i think it's around 10 or 20% of the hard drive size, but you can set it to what you want in MB

Thanks again for your input.

Hi Keith
Word has an option (Depending on version it should be something like Tools->Options->File Locations TAB->Auto Recovery Files). It defaults to the C:\ drive unless you tell it otherwise.
This will be why Word filled the C: drive with the "crashed" word files
