Could be I might be on the way to the knackers yard.

I have been having trouble with AOL not connecting a few weeks ago. So I eventually found and downloaded a different UK version of AOL 9VR.
This apparently was not the same as my old version and it didn't allow me to access my old e-mails.
So next step was to find and download an original American version 9.5 which put everything back to normal again with all old e-mails and favourite's retained.

But soon after all this I started experiencing the Blue Screen of death appearing either during or shortly after booting up.... Crying or Very sad
I removed a new USB extension and then did a restore to a month ago. But although not as regular the Blue Screen still appears most days and I end up going through the re-boot process a couple of times before normal service is resumed.

Can I ask is this a sign of impending doom or catastrophe and what can I expect to either prevent or do in the end please?

Ray.

Wait for a real expert Ray, but it might only be a sign that you are "infected" with the AOL virus.

I jest of course (but only slightly) as AOL can be problematic and is very difficult to remove completely from your machine. It clashes with some programs and causes - well, you know what it causes!!! Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

There are ways of stripping it out, which have been posted on here, and someone will come on and advise I'm sure.

A different ISP may well cure the problem. Very Happy Very Happy

Not much help I'm afraid but AOL (US) and AOL (UK and Europe) are now completely unrelated companies and have been I understand since the parent company sold the European arm off about 4/5 years ago. It could be a case of incampatability twixt versions of the software.

I no longer use the AOL browser but just Firefox and get emails through AOL email. Not much help I'm sure to your present predicament. A bit like being told that you should'nt start from here after asking directions.

Good luck Dick

Thanks Dave and Dick. But I am going to stick with AOL for a variety of reasons.

Same e-mail address for 15 years.
All printing contains my AOL address.
Free phone to 90 countries.
Free mobile with 10 mins a month.

Many of my old AOL friends moved due to one problem or another to other ISPs and continued to have problems. So I now note these same friends end up changing again and again and I won't go down that route.

I guess the reason there are so many complaints about AOL is the same reason Michelin get so many complaints about RV tyres. They are the largest supplyer. Bound to get some.

Thanks again Ray.

Without knowing which operating system you are using, I would suggest:
1. Use CHKDSK /F from a command prompt (Dos box) - Start/Accessories or Start/Accessories/System

if that doesn´t help
2. Download a 30-day trial of Tune-Up Utilities from http://www.tuneup-software.co.uk/download/ and run One Click Maitenance as many times as it takes to either report No Problems or the number of problems becomes static each run.

if that doesn´t fix it
3. Do a disk defrag - Start/Accessories/System and then run TuneUp again

if that doesn´t do, let us know.

Thanks Patrick.
I'm using Vista Home Premium.

Not sure about ( Use CHKDSK /F from a command prompt (Dos box) -) but Vista defrags weekly.

Will now try the tune up download.

Thanks and will let you know.

Hi Ray

A bsod is what they call a 'stop error' and usually, but not always, it is related to hardware, when problems happen in software, the operating system catches it and responds, for example when you get a message such as 'this program has performed an illegal operation and will now close' etc. however when you get a stop error, something has happened and the operating system has had an absolute panic, it has halted practically all processes, including many operating system processes, shutdown as much of the hardware as it can and then displayed the error message. the good news is that if you record the details displayed, the long line of digits etc, you can search for this on the internet and find further information, the numbers try to identify the item that caused the panic etc. the bad news is that the further information doesn't always help find a cure. in my experience the hard disk controller has often been identified as involved, but obviously you need to search with the details you have.

Thanks Lee.
Will try and copy all the info from the blue screen next time it freezes. O maybe take a picture if it looks like it's going to close.

Thanks Ray.

Hi Ray!

The last time I had the blue screen was a few months before I bought this computer!

I went through the same processes as you have but it reached the point of no return. The computer simply would not start up. All the clues and internet advice kept telling me that the hard-drive had failed. Yes, that was possible. Rolling Eyes

What hurt me most was that I lost a year's photos which I'd not got round to transferring to CD. France 2006, 400+ photos - all gone! Crying or Very sad

So, before your computer crashes completely, get off everything that you need or treasure. Also, try an external hard-drive for photos. That's where all mine go regularly. Wink

Good luck with your search for a solution. Evil or Very Mad

Thanks Unclenorm.
This is what I was worried about.... !!!! Confused

I do religiously back up manually to a small 60GB external about once a month. But I also have a slot in 300GB Media Drive HD that backs up weekly when I push it home.

But my worst nightmare is losing all my saved e-mails from out fraud losses. I usually 'fwd' then onto my Hotmail and Yahoo address but it's just not so convenient to retrieve them.

At the moment it's touch and go. Most mornings I get the Blue Screen and it goes through a reboot. But a few mornings it boots up perfectly?? Confused

I guess eventually I will have to reinstall Windows and hope I don't lose too much. But the PC is only just 2 years old.

Thanks again.

Ray.
