Just got back from Brugge visiting Friends and felt to warn everyone (if you didn't already know) that Belgium has a crazy road regulation that vehicles have right of way from the right.

Meaning, you are driving along when a vehicle can shoot out infront of you and if you hit them it would be your fault.

This is not on main roads - thankfully.

The aire at Brugge is now 24 Euros and looks nice - right by the canals and walking distance to the centre.

Parking is still free on the ring road.

In Spain is also de same regulation, if there´s not a sign, you must give way.

Hi!

Not only Belgium, but the whole of Europe except UK and Ireland.

The rule is rather simple: If right of way is not regulated by traffic lights or signs, then it is "right before left". Only condition is that the traffic from the right must be on a road, private driveways etc. do not count.

Best Regards,
Gerhard

Not only that but it is also worth bearing in mind that cyclists have right of way at junctions and roundabouts etc. If they are travelling for instance on an adjacent cycle path and you want to turn right you must allow cyclists to cross before proceeding yourself. Having cycled in Belgium on a number of occasions it can be rather unnerving to find yourself ignoring Brit convention and blithely cycle over road junctions etc without bothering to stop.

As always there is some truth in all the above but the one salient fact not given is that if a vehicle coming from the right on an unprioritised junction stops then it loses its right of way. However, you don't know that it has stopped until it does! As ever, caution is the watchword.

After driving for some 20 odd years in Germany I can only say that it's a brilliant system. Just watch out for the priority signs, it's pretty obvious who has priority and where after a little practice - In fact I am guilty of still slowing and looking right on minor roads in a built up areas over here.
