I am a remote worker with a company with their own VPN link and I connect via the link or connect to the internet using Microsoft Outlook (version = 2007 Outlook Anywhere is the exchange server).
I have not given anyone access other than 1 other person to view only and they are not highly IT literate.
I have come across 2 mails which I have not originated or sent but they appear as if I have sent them.
Please can anyone advise if someone is writing e mails and sending out as someone else, how the e mails can be traced to the originator of the mails?
Also how do you trace the related messages to the mails in question and check the recipient string on the e mail trail etc - (long headers I believe?) as is it possible to confirm who originated the mail from this?
I have received many of these emails, one just yesterday, from a relative in Oz or so the email address said. When I started reading it,I realised that the writing format was not one that would be adopted by that person normally so I deleted it.Within the email content,it stated that she had allegedly bought a new blackberry phone from a certain website. It's just another ploy to bypass scam filters and get you to go onto retail websites.
I had also had "returned" mail to my business email address stating that the email address was not valid and unable to deliver my email. When I read the email that I was supposed to have sent,it was, again advertising but not by me.
Nothing is safe on the net and you have to be aware of that. They can access you email account and your email address book too. It's when a business user allegedly starts sending out emails of the crude and lude format, that is the problem. If your /friends/associates are unaware, they may actually think you have sent them that email.I already have a link from a Viagra site in Canada that shuffles people to my website.I cannot find the link on the website but it is obviously being used to host some of their products.Heaven knows why though!Maybe, you could add a personal signature to your emails and so your email recipients would know that their correspondence did actually come from you.Using a GIF or PNG image can be more difficult to copy too if you want to use a blinkie or similar.
You may be able to approach your email host and ask them but there isn't much you can do really.Make sure you have the necessary spy/spam fiters on and just be careful who you are sending to.
À tous mes amis du forum thankyou pour toutes vos pensées agréables et avec son amour derrière moi je lutterai contre mon conflit avec un esprit de postive et le triomphe
Sorry i think i need to explain better. I am having a few issues at work at the moment. I think my company are trying to discredit me by putting an email in my sent box to them accepting something that i have not agreed to (if that makes sense).
So my question is as i have very limited access, can they plant an email in my system that i have not sent but has allegedly come from me?
How can i trace when this happened? How can i find the header's on this system.
Even if someone at your work does not have your password etc.,they could plant an email in your sent box.Anything is possible nowadays. As for tracing the culprit-Can you turn the sent email into HTML and look to see if there is a rogue name within that perhaps? Can you prove you didn't send the email because your job is in jeopardy? If you feel you have been maliciously targeted, you can always contact the police.

Please help
Don't know if this helps, but it is certainly possible to transfer messages to someone elses "sent" box, it is something I do on a daily basis
In our office we send out consultations from our personal accounts to Building Inspectors, and then we transfer the message from our sent box to our office sent box (a simple drag and drop) we do it in case there are queries when we are out of office (so anyone in the office can access the consultations)
also
Anyone who has your password, can also send messages from your account by simply logging on "as you" I have sent emails on behalf of colleagues, in there absence logging onto MS exchange using their email logon and password.
You may be able to drag and drop a message from one folder to another, but the address sent from would still be yours.
Only a system administrator would be able to get a message to appear to come from another persons account, but even then, if there was need to the embedded code could be interregated to prove that it was not sent by the owner of the mailbox.
In my opinion, the vast majority of IT professionals would not be party to tampering with other peoples accounts, espessially sending of messages disguised as someone else.
It certainly can be done Frank, but I don't know how to do it.
We are out this evening with someone who will know how to do it, but I don't know if he will be willing to tell me. (He is very professional and may not want to let on.)
I'll ask, and if he tells I'll pass it on tomorrow - via a PM!!!!
