About 3 months ago I purchased an Acer Laptop from John Lewis. I got a guy in to set it all up for me and all seemed fine.
Took me a little while to get used to it but only slight problem seemed to be the keyboard which I found had a slightly different 'feel' to keys. I type at a reasonable speed having been taught on the old manual typewriters back in the 60's and have used many different keyboards and PC's over the years without any problem until now.
The main problem is that one or two of the keys (in particular the 's' key) doesn't work 9 times out of 10 and I am constantly having to go back and check the text. I thought it must be me not depressing the key firmly enough but now I think it must be a faulty key.
I asked the salesman at John Lewis about it and he suggested it might be dust or dirt under the keyboard but it has been doing this from new and the guy who set up my laptop for me is suggesting I return the laptop to JL for a replacement.
I am worried however that all my personal details will remain behind on the hard drive and wonder if it is worth the bother of returning it. The PC guy tells me there are ways of wiping the hard drive now but I thought there was still a problem with details remaining.
Any thoughts?
Thanks as ever
Maura

Yes, but an external USB keyboard would work with the laptop as would an external USB mouse. I am currently typing this message on such a setup since I also found that the laptop keyboard wasn't to my liking, but my desktop PC's was. So, I went out and bought the same for the laptop. Only when I am "on the road" do I have to suffer the laptop keyboard.

Oh, please don't be embarrassed - I appreciate your replying. You should see some of the bloopers I make

I could use a separate keyboard but I still think the thing should work properly in the first place and if I wasn't worried about the hard drive thing then it would have gone back straight away.
If you only knew how annoying it is having to go back and insert all the blooming sssssssssssss's

I fully understand - I have limited movement in one of my hands and my (specially adapted) external keyboard is a godsend!
In response to your original question - in theory it is possible to completely wipe a hard drive clean. In practice, traces are left that can be used for forensic analysis later. I seem to remember that was how Gary Glitter got into trouble some years ago - he is reported as having dropped his laptop into PC World in Bristol for repair and they found traces of porn on his hard drive ..... not that I am implying you would have such on yours!!!! Even so, personal information can always be used against you and you are wise to be concerned.

PS - I worked for many years in the IT industry in a sensitive area (NOT banking!) and we had a rule that the only way to put data beyond recovery was to smash the hard drive with a hammer!

On a laptop your files are normally put into drive 'D' - the hard drive is partitioned into two parts, one part for the operating system and the other for personal files. The are programmes that remove files totally like >>THIS ONE<< os google 'file deletion'
Hope that helps

The above is only a personal opinion
Hi
Its possible to wipe a drive but this needs to be done by a specialist company. Its not a case of just "formatting the drive" as all this does is clear the file allocation table which is only a set of signposts telling the computer where the data is. the data remains in place and so experts can get at it.
