Can you help me here...???
After getting a new hard drive and Vista operating system put into my PC the tech also put a smaller 40GB drive in as a slave. Worked OK.
But I have just bought a new terabyte Hard Drive and put it in place of the old 40GB one. Now when I boot up the PC does not 'see' the new terabyte drive only the 'C' drive with Vista on it.
Can anyone guide me in simple language to get into the BIOS to initiate the slave drive please?
To get to the BIOS will depend on the manufacturer of the PC, but usually you simply hold down one of the 'F' keys ('F2' or 'F8' on Dell's) during the boot process (it usually says this on the screen as you boot).
Once in the BIOS (depending on the manufacturer again) you will be able to navigate your way to the section where your drives are listed.
Did your new drive have a little black jumper that you use to change it from master/slave/auto?
What type of drive is it (ATA, SATA, scsi)?
If you've plugged the drive straight into the mother board, it could be possible that the disk controller is not up to the job of controlling a 1Tb drive. (40Gb to 1TB is a rather huge difference!) It may be an idea to make it an external drive, you can buy the gubbins to put the terrabyte drive into and connect it via USB.
There are some 'jumpers' at the back of the drive - the jumpers must be configured to designate the drive as a 'slave' There are usually some diagrams somewhere on the drive

The above is only a personal opinion

Phill.
Thanks Phil.
The PC manufacturer is HP and I think it's 'F10' gets me into the BIOS.
I did look for jumpers but could not see any and on another forum they indicated that SATA drives didn't have em. Not sure now without opening it up again.
It's a Serial ATA or SATA with the small red data cable. Manufacturer Toshiba.
I did just change it over with the 40GB additional slave installed last week. I already have a plug in external 320GB drive but thats not pushed home in the Media Bay.
Most drives come as master by default. Did you get a little sheet of information with the drive? Have you looked online for technical information about the drive?
You will also ahve to go into disk management and allocate a drive letter to the new disk.
Its under control panel- system and maintenance-administrative tools-computer management-storage you will also have to be an administrator as well.
Thanks Derek.
I did try to do just that but it beat me.
I could see the additional terabyts drive listed as 'drive2' but couldn't figure how to assign it or rename it. It still didn't show when back to My Computer.
Somehow parts of the directions are always missing assumed knowledge.

Hi Gerald.
Nope, no sheet or info.
Have looked online but always seem to find conflicting info. Like jumper or no jumper.
Also once again the writers assume a level of knowledge so they miss out some steps.
It's always a bit daunting when you are left at a point with several options and this step is not detailed.
Bit like French signposts.
If it's showing up as drive 2, then it must have auto-allocated itself as a slave drive. Did you try following camper69's post on allocating a drive letter to it? You would probably need to reboot afterwards.
