My internet connection speed is showing at 54.0 mbps. Last week I got on to my isp and agreed an upgrade and new monthly deal, as I was tempted to get my mac code and change to o2(I still might). Anyway I have just checked the speed and there has been no change.
Any advice?

How are you getting that figure? If I hover over the icon on the tray it shows 54 Mbps which is normal for 11g. There are websites which tell you your broadband speed - mines currently 2.7gigs try http://www.speedtest.net/ If I use an 'N'draft router it shows 130Mps.
I think you are seeing your router speed

I think Richardjames is correct about seeing your router speed.

At home I'm with BT and pay for an 8meg speed - but get somethink like 4.5 megs on a speedtest - that being said I still never seem to be able to download anything at more than about 300kbs.

I was thinking of upgrading to 16megs but am concerned that I would be paying for nothing. The router thay use is the same, the exchange is just as far away, the phone lines are the same - if they can give me UPTO 16 megs then why cant they currently give me the 8MEGS I'm paying for?

Yes you are right Richard, thats my router speed,- bit of a nunce when it comes to all this jargon. clicked on that site and downloaded clean up your computer. Saw the graph of comparison, could not see exactly what gbs I am on, where is that. Should I dump all my contents of my junk files? or any others that have anything in them. Thanks you guys for your response, really appreciated When I spoke Virginmedia they did not tell me that 54 would be my router speed, makes me wonder whether they know what they are talking about Exclamation Razz

I find that Virgin are one of the best isp's out there and certainly one of the fastest. I pay for 20 meg and get really close to that and sometimes just over it on my wired connection at off peak times so they look like a much better deal than BT if you can get it in your area. Very Happy

Hi

You're not a nunce, this is a pet hate of mine and i can't understand why ISPs get away with it, especially BT who seem to be the worst offenders with their tv ad campaigns etc, they supply a bog standard wired internet service, give you a wireless access point and claim to be giving you a wireless internet connection. totally misleading.

whenever there is a router involved, there is at least two networks, that's what routers do, they sit on the boundaries of networks and route data packets between them. in a home scenario like this the router has a connection to the ISPs network (wired through the phone line) and a connection to your home network (wireless and/or wired), the router then routes data between the two networks, however the wireless component is purely within the home network, between the computers and the routers access point, the connection to the ISP and then ultimately the internet is wired.

as you have realised; when you look at the wireless connection speed on your computer, it is refering to the speed of the wireless connection to the home network, nothing to do with the speed of the internet connection.

out of interest i tried richards link to the speed test, it stated 6.20 Mb/s, 5MB mp3 = 7seconds, 35MB video clip = 46 seconds and 800MB movie = 17 minutes, which is probably about right as it generally takes me around 15 minutes to download a complete Xvid movie from the internet. i use zen internet ISP with an upto 8Mb connection (although they have emailed me stating they are giving a free upgrade to adsl2+ which is upto 24Mb), i highly recommend zen, mines been running 24/7 for 9 years without a single problem, they're definately not the cheapest.

Hi Lee, (this is secondgo at typing this out-lappy Acer is a magician and keep doing disappearing act with my typing, ) yes you are right -I got this from virgin today
Dear Customer,Thanks for your email. Please note that you are on upto 8 Mb package. As per our records your line is capable of handling 2.5 Mb to 3 Mb speed.Hence we are unable to provide a speed greater than the one specified above. In order to confirm the maximum speed your phone line can handle, please visit the link given below:http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome You need to enter the telephone number and click on ‘submit’.

This I did and yes BT tell due to the length of line 1 mbps service may require an enginer to visit etc. currentline is 2.5mbps or greater. Is BT gradually putting in fibre optics or am I thing G&T's or contact lenses Smile Wink Smile Cheers, Wendy

oh and i forgot to say that if you are uncomfortable with that then you can check through the following;

On the Availability Checker through the BT.com or on www.samknows.com it would show what the customer can expect to get

The 54mps on the ‘connection speed’ could be what the Wireless Modem is delivering rather than the Line Speed your getting

Regarding the comment “I still never seem to be able to download anything at more than about 300kbs.” I rarely get more than this when I download (although it doesn’t say from what sites) and this is normally more to do with the person ‘sharing’ to the person downloading

I’d recommend giving your details to your SP's Technical Guys as it looks like not everyone is 100% on what issues they may have and the Tech guys could explain to you properly.
